A Dark Dividing February 8, 2008 L. Evans (England) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I highly recommend this book.It was unputdownable! Its complex storyline was very involved although the deeper the involvement got the more you try to guess the link between the characters, the link slowly unveils itself in a way that makes you not be able to stop reading. I felt every emotion the mothers felt,it was written that well. I must read more of Sarah Raynes books!!
Original and gripping! March 17, 2007 Joeycat (UK) 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
I had never heard of this author, but intrigued by the cover and blurb, thought I'd give this book a go and I am so glad I did. With twists and turns you don't see coming and a sense of darkness throughout, this book was a complex, compelling thriller that was so original, I am defintely going to read her other books!
Excellent January 16, 2007 Ms. G. L. Clark (Manchester UK) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is the best book I have read in years, kept me gripped throughout. Definately one of my all time favourites. I hadn't heard of the author before but will make sure I read the rest of her books, there's only a few!!
A wonderful read December 21, 2006 A reader in the UK 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I was drawn to this by the reference to twins in the synopsis, and have not enjoyed a book so much for a long time. The linking of the stories of two sets of twins - one in the present day and one at the start of the twentieth century - makes for a great tale. At times it's quite a spooky story, particularly when the present-day Simone believes she is being haunted by a child from the past, and when she explores the ruined house, 'Mortmain', which seems to hold so many secrets. But there's humour to balance the dark parts - especially from the delightful Edwardian flirt, Charlotte, mother of the twins born in 1900, whose lively diaries are interspersed with the plot. A really terrific book and highly recommended.
Good read despite a few misgivings October 18, 2006 G. Rodrigues (London, United Kingdom) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
To refer to this as a 'potboiler' would not give appropriate credit to what was a very exciting read indeed. The complexities of the story line are manifold and managed with great skill, ensuring the reader is required to hang on to every written word, especially in the most tense moments. The three historical periods covered (early 20th Century, 1980s and present day) each contain highly gripping elements which succeed in maintaining the reader's anticipation of the outcome and despite occasionally incongruous elements (eg; language used by Charlotte, an essentially Victorian lady in her diary - although this could be a crude attempt to suggest she was more 'modern' than her contemporaries) this is a cracking good read. If nothing else, it's an original slant on the murder mystery genre. Will be reading more from this author in future.
