This is a profoundly moving novel, beautifully written (as one would expect from this author). Drawing upon her multicultural background (Poland, France, North America and Britain), Appignanesi has written a story which explores many of the cross currents of history under Nazism, particularly as it affected life in Poland and Eastern Europe.
Prof. Bruno Lind returns to Vienna with his daughter (an adopted black Afro-American). The novel weaves together his early life, in flashback to the WWII years, growing up as a Jew in Poland, with his present life. Central to the story is a journey which he takes with two other people who turn out to be deeply woven into his story in unexpected but most revealing ways.
Appiganesi has a wonderful way with her characters, and draws the reader into the atmosphere of the War so that we feel deeply and care about her characters. They are real people in their loves and losses, their suffering and relationships.
As with all her work, there is another layer of significance, that of investigating psychological processes--in this case, memory.
Books about people's experience in WWII abound. The question is, is this one worth choosing from among the many? In my opinion, yes, because it explores in depth the profound depths of life under Nazism. I shall certainly be looking for other books by this author, as I know that I shall be in for a treat.
