Well written, fast-paced story March 3, 2000 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was going to read this book after I had finished some others; but, when it arrived and I started skimming through it, I immediately got drawn in. I simply couldn't put it down. It's a fast-paced story with many threads, all of which create an anticipation of an extraordinary climax, which it certainly delivers. A dark, possessed madman with unlimited resources and his army of doomsday militants are eagerly planning the crime of the millennium. All they need is the window created when financial centers shut down their computers for routine software upgrades on New Years eve. The story highlights the tensions of what could happen when the technology that we had assumed would keep our fortunes and our very lives from risk are turned against us. The story is frighteningly believable. This is a book to incite tension and empathy. It is a window of how vulnerable we are to our own fragile inventions, filled with provocative ideas that invite debate. A first-rate thriller.
Keeps You Up! February 27, 2000 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Millennium Project kept me up till all hours! Not having a military or technical background, I nevertheless found it fascinating. Massucci has a way of combining characters, dialogue, and technical facts that make the story easy to follow. The character's are interesting, action is awesome and the ending makes you want more. This would make a great movie! I'm looking forward to seeing the author's next work.
Exciting Read! August 4, 1999 This was a book I found hard to put down. An intriguing story, good characters, and with action and thrills that just won't let up. This is a great read that should satisfy long after we kiss this century good-bye!
Not Really About Y2K July 15, 1999 I found this fast-paced thriller very engaging. But not because of Y2K. In fact, rather than boring me with computer bugs, the story is a fascinating (albeit violent) look at industrial and financial terrorism, a diversion I found refreshing, not to mention thrilling. I don't believe the world is about to come to an end from this computer glitch or even the second coming, but obviously some people do. And this book takes a breathtaking look at what might happen if some of those crazies exploit our vulnerabilities to gain real power. Apocalyptic headlines aside, I enjoyed this book for its likeable characters, fast story and loads of suspense. Just when I thought it was safe to get on an airplane at the stroke of midnight, the book's master terrorist starts pulling them from the sky like toys. And there's even a good piece of common sense in the book: when our terrorist uses computers to play havoc with aircraft, an old helicopter is put back into service in order to avoid disasters. I must also mention our heroes' use of chemical and semi-biological computers with massively parallel capabilities -- this is absolutely awesome technology which, I understand, is considered to be strong possibilities for the future. And there's so much more here to enjoy. All-in-all, a great read!
