great book June 9, 2008 Mr. G. Mason (UK Sussex) Really good book on fitness. Makes it so easy to read and has a step by step timestable which you follow to get to peak fitness and realistic targets. Great how he emphasises the correct food to eat even with a timetable on what you should eat from breakfast to dinner and even turns into a little cook book with recipes and shopping lists haha. Worth gettin and its great because you will get fit reading it and offers some good advice
Good for getting into milspec shape, best for aspiring recruits February 19, 2008 F. E. Mckinney (Derby, England) The description of the book tells you it's about getting fit, but that's only half the volume of the book. Much of the book is about getting into the British Army, either the standard or elite sections, complete with 4-month training schedules and locations for the full-load runs that you would be expected to complete. You do get a warm-up routine familiar to anyone who's done military PE, plus a selection of weight workouts, a guide to running and swimming/cycling, but no other definitive guidance about getting fit...until you get to the 16-week 'getting ready for recruit training' schedule, which you may or may not be interested in. If your plan is to get into the British special forces, then great, and this is the ideal thing for you. If, however, you're looking for a complete military-style workout, you're better off looking on military forums or finding another book.
Fighting Fit - with a Job & Family to boot July 4, 2007 Mr. Andrew P. Clark (UK) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Adrian Weales book is a concise, no nonsense guide telling you exactly what you need to know and do to raise your fitness to a high standard in a short period of time. Since the late 90's I took Para selection and then selection with a branch of the SAS. As a territorial/reservist it can often be hard maintaining fitness, work & family. This guide was invaluable. I got to spend some of my service time with the UK's finest Regiments. I would not have made it through selection without this help. Got fitness aspirations? - buy this book
Excellent Fitness Primer for Soldiers and Civvies Alike June 18, 2007 N. Clarke (Birmingham, England) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought the large-format, illustrated version of this book back in 1993 when I was getting fit to join the TA, and found it to be invaluable; at that time there was simply nothing comparable available for people who wished to advance their fitness levels beyond the lightweight, lycra-clad lunacy of Mr Motivator. Needless to say the programmes in this book were extremely effective in storing up the cardiovascular and muscular fitness that was necessary for lugging enormous rucksacks across rough country. It is still relevant, although I suspect that the dietary advice and equipment pages could do with an update, since so much has come onto the market since that time. Read, digest, put into practice and watch the weight drop off. Just don't expect the edition to include a free bit of black tape to paste over your eyes for the class photo.
Great fitness book June 15, 2007 C. N. Rose (Surrey, England) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book does(as someone said earlier) look like it was written for 10 year old boys, but is a very good fitness book. It describes different exercises well, and has various fitness routines worked out, as well as good, healthy recipies for low fat and calorie food. Where this book comes into its own, however, is if you are thinking of applying for SAS, Para, or Commando training, or want to reach the level of fitness where you could consider it. The book has a 4 month fitness course that will take you to an equivalent fitness to members of the SAS, and also describes details of the selection courses for the SAS, Paras and Commandos. Altogether, this is an invaluable book for general fitness work, and especially for members (or potential members) of the armed forces.
