Beats any other diet recipe book hands down! June 22, 2008 J. Crick I got this book for Christmas last year and am now going to purchase a copy for my Mum who I hope will enjoy it as much as I have. My boyfriend is in the kitchen cooking the fish pie as I type, he is adding a couple of boiled eggs and capers to the dish. We have nearly cooked our way through the entire book. I had a chocolate craving earlier this afternoon and made the delicious spiced hot chocolate. I don't think of it as a diet book, just a fantastic cook book which has simple and tasty recipes which don't take very long to prepare and cook.
A book you CAN use!! June 17, 2008 S. Thompson (Guildford,Surrey) I had been trying to mix-up our culinary routine for a while and had tried lots of books, with little success, until this one! We hadnt actually seen the programme, but saw the reviews on Amazon and tried the book and love it! (I would actually say now that i have seen the programme i find the women a bit annoying - but i will let them of as the book is soo good.) We have cooked and tried nearly every recipe and apart from the rice noodles one, we have liked them all. We particularly love the carbanara, ceasar salad, coconut oatmeal, lebanese kebabs, burgers, potatoe skins, roast dinner, cooked breakfast etc etc....mmmmm *mouth watering just thinking about them!* I would state that we have not lost weight while following this system (we have done breakfast, dinner and lunch recipes and exercised), but we havent gained any either. What we have achived is a varied diet, moving away from our weekly routine of stodgy spag bol and fatty sausages and mash etc etc with some really different yummy NON-DIET tasting food - and at the end day this is what we wanted. LOVE THIS BOOK - buy it!!
great book, but best recipes are free from website! June 13, 2008 Avid Reader I wanted to buy this book as soon as I saw an episode of the TV series, and was not disappointed - no nonsense sensible advise cookbook with easy to follow recipes that actually turn out. My only addition to what has been said elsewhere is to go look at the C4 website and download some of the extra recipes available there - especially the cakes. I have made and adapted the lemon and almond cake - making it with hazelnut and orange as well and have to say it is a fabulous cake and not available in the book. Also there is another one for chocolate brownies with pumpkin - again exceptionally good and not in the book.
Ughh! May 19, 2008 P. J. A. Jennings (Oxfordshire) 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
Having watched a number of the television shows, I bought the book and made some of the recipes. I don't know what the people on the show really thought, but my family wouldn't eat them, they were revolting. The substitute ingredients from the "full fat" recipes just don't work.
The only thing i liked about this book was the retro cover! April 3, 2008 Mrs Sillybean (Bath, England) 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
My mother in law bought me this book for christmas knowing that i am a serial dieter and always trying to lose weight. The first part of the book has a series of quizes and lists detailing high fat foods and how you can substitute them for lower fat alternatives. As someone who is very consious of the fat and sugar content in foods i didnt find this helpful at all. I dont ever eat crisps or savory snacks, i hate bread, never drink fizzy drinks and stay away from biscuits at all costs because i know i can resist them, so the substitutions didnt help me at all because i have already cut all those things out of my diet anyway. The only thing i do eat that is bad is chocolate!!! They have a recipe in there for chocolate truffles but there is no gain out of making them. it would be easier for me to break off two squares of chocolate and hide the rest than go through the process of making these frankly delecious and irresistable truffles that i cant stay away from!!!! The first chaper is on breakfasts but unless you rise at 5.30am or earlier there is no way you are going to achieve any of these as they are so fussy and complicated. Similarly the soups and salads have ingredients in ive never heard of which really put me off and i personally wouldnt got out of my way to buy bits of pieces of things for these highly complicated salads. I have tried a few recipes from the book and they were admittedly very nice but most are complicated with unknown or expensive ingredients. For anyone who has a full time job like me and likes to eat before 8pm in the evening this book is overly complicated and ambitious.
