5 out of 5 stars Fantastic shounen-ai series with a good plot   April 20, 2008
Christian Otto (Germany)
Wow, what a great story for the final volume in this series. Ryo and Dee have to protect a woman as bodyguards, who has entered the witness-protection program of the FBI. What complicates the matter is the fact that this woman is married to the number two man in organized crime in New York. But the woman also seems to have plans of her own...

Ok, in addition to lots of kissing and snuggling of Ryo and Dee in the other books of the series, this is the volume where Ryo and Dee finally make love. Actually they're making love twice. The first time Ryo is still unsure, but decides to throw his doubts overboard. But it takes Ryo another three weeks until he finally declares his love for Dee on a trip to Long Island. And after that they make love again. ;)

This series as a whole is simply terrific, the drawings are beautiful and sometimes hilariously funny and the characters are interesting. The love scenes in my opinion are always tasteful and sweet. I just loved this series.

5 out of 5 stars special ending   July 29, 2006
Kay (Bordeaux, France)
I really like this manga. I want to add a comment to "strawberry_miow"'s. It's true that the ending leaves some unfinished feeling about Dee and Ryo's story but for those who would be interested, there is a special ending that take place after the 7th volume of Fake. You can find it in the artbook COLOUR {includes a b+w section titled 'MONOCROME', which also includes the ultimate ending of 'FAKE', entitled 'LIKE, LIKE, LOVE').

5 out of 5 stars Fake - At last!   July 17, 2004

This was the second manga I ever read, after Murakami's lovely Gravitation series, and although it wasn't chronologically the first, it *is* the one I love the most. After six books of wonderful, heart-pounding UST (sort of... things do happen), and enough 'almost's to make you want to hunt down Sanami Matoh with a sharp implement, we finally reach a... climax. Ahem.

Although, as has been previously stated, there is a sense of 'what next?' about the final volume, I can't really imagine what it would take to live up to all the expectations the series has raised. I can only feel very thankful that it was so good in the first place; enough to make me care so much, even for characters like JJ!

The art is characteristically good, although there are some few awkward moments - as always. The character designs have stayed true, and thank God for that! Though Sanami Matoh's men can be bone-meltingly pretty at time, it's always tempered with essential masculinity, which I find rather appealing.

As always, there is the mandatory detective sub-plot, although this one is rather more important and affecting than those which have gone before. It almost matters as much as our protagonists' romance, although obviously never quite. Also on the subject of sub-plots, it seems we must wave a sad goodbye to Carol and Bikky's usual final chapter. A sad, sad goodbye. *snicker*

And lastly, what is obviously the most important part: the 'M' (Mature - 18+) rating. Oh yes, my friends. Although it goes without saying that it is the pretty artwork and absorbing plots that have brought you thus far, perhaps nothing more than an innocent curiosity about the interpersonal relationships in the NYPD, sometimes sex helps. It really does. But don't worry, you emotion junkies, it's not just hormones between these pages, or I honestly don't think I'd have bothered reading this far. There are real, mixed-up feelings here that were a joy to unravel, and I'll admit that at one point I had to stop and make myself remember just how much had gone before, what they'd already been through, to make sure I could understand just how deep everything went. It would have been wasted otherwise.

I really was very, very happy with this manga. There are genuine moments of humour in here, as well as the occasional flash of angst that doesn't feel in the least way indulgent. I don't care if you're not really into shounen-ai or yaoi, this manga deserves more than those labels. It's a wonderful, absorbing romance with clear, charismatic characters. I honestly don't have anything bad to say about it other than I have, which isn't much. I love Ryo, Dee and everyone else, even JJ. I'm sorry to see them go.

Eleanor.

5 out of 5 stars A great end to a great series .....   May 11, 2004

One of the best shounen-ai manga series goes out with a bang, literally .... If you haven't read the first 6 books then you really need to read them first (obviously), but this is what it's all been leading up to, the question that everyone's been asking: Will Ryo and Dee get it on? Without giving too much away, there's a clue in the fact that this book is rated 'M' (Mature - 18+) for adult content, whereas the other books in the series are 'OT' (Older Teen - 16+). Anyway, a ~highly~ recommended book; well drawn, funny, great plot, cute, romantic, and sexy as hell!

4 out of 5 stars This love ain`t FAKE   May 7, 2004

The final installment in the "Fake" manga series.

After following our dynamic duo through their crime-busting antics on the streets of NYC, the taking in of the dubiously dubbed Bikky and the fortuitous meeting with the young pickpocket named Carol the well-loved series draws to a close. Like all other Manga, of course, you have your dramatic cliches but it is excellent nonethless.

Whereas in volumes 1-6 there has been friendly jousting, the USL and general all-around question of "Will they won`t they?" issue 7 ties up all loose ends and then some. Ryo`s parents and the unsurity we all feel about his past is addressed in detail and we see the changes he has gone through throughout the series hit us in one hard blow. For those that like Romance stories I would highly recommend FAKE however the lack of such in the last manga was quite disappointing. As the story reaches it`s climax the same attitudes of the characters are still portrayed which I find very admirable however it does make them appear a little stiff, unflexible and it would have been nice to see a truly happy ending to one of the most wonderful Manga series I know of.

Just call me a sucker for Fairytale endings.

The reason for four stars rather than five, as I`m sure many of you have guessed, is simply the fact that the ending leaves the whole thing feeling unfinished and the question: "And...?" lingering in the midst.

Avid folowers may be disappointed but the large amout of Dee and Ryo action by all means makes up for it.
