too succint August 28, 2005 A. Medana (london) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I read avidly this book in a matter of few hours and was left disappointed. There are not so many insights or anecdotes about one of the greatest figures in martial arts history. Coming from his own son, I thought there would be more material but if you take the pictures off, this book becomes a very thin booklet. What I sense is that the authors have tried too hard to find lessons about Ip Man's life and past behaviours and impart with their views. Is it what we wanted? I question that. What we wanted (I am myself a WC practioner) is more of Ip Man's daily life, bits of conversations, the hardships he went through, his relationships (good and bad) with his students, who was accepted in the close circle, how he taught at the beginning and the end of his life (I am not talking techniques here but where he used to put his emphasis on), simple things really. This portrait is more an outline but it is still valuable (simply because it exists) and not that expensive so give it a go but don't expect too much.
Learn about the man who started in all August 22, 2003 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
A Great book if you want to get under the skin of Ip Man, learn about his past, history and what ultimately lead to him being one of the most influential teachers of the last 100 yrs of Kung-Fu training. Recommended for series followers of the art who want to brush up on their knowledge/teaching heritage.
Ip Man Portrait of a kung fu master September 3, 2002 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Ip Man was Bruce Lee's teacher in Hong Kong. This book gives an insight into the life of a truly great kung fu master as told by his son Grandmaster Ip Ching and Ip Ching's disciple Master Ron Heimburger. There are plenty of photographs mixed in with each paragraph. Each paragraph paints a picture at a point in time of the life of Ip Man and his family and students. This book is a must for anyone who studies Wing Chun Kung Fu.
An insight into one of china's greatest martial artists! April 30, 2002 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Written by Ip Ching, Ip Man's son, this book cuts through all of the hype & illusion surrounding this incredibly talented man, the forefather of modern wing chun. The book is laid out into 15 different sections, each explaining a little about the Grandmaster's life and a virtue to be upheld. An inspiring book I highly recommend not just to wing chun practioners, but to all martial artists. Expertly written & some great first hand accounts of Ip Man's fighting prowess allied to some exclusive photo's, this book is one to come back to time & time again. Enjoy!!!!
