I received this book from my mother for my 21st birthday some years ago. It IS the best gift I ever received in my life!!!! Although some authors unknown, they would have been great people I am sure. So true to life and everyday living, I recommend every household have a copy of this as most have a Bible...this is the next best thing!!
THOUGHT PROVOKING April 22, 1999
I BOUGHT THIS BOOK YEARS AGO, READ IT AND FORGOT ABOUT IT. HOWEVER, YEARS LATER HAVING LOST TRACK OF ITS WHEREABOUTS, I FIND MYSELF REMEMBERING BITS AND PIECES OF THE GEMS HELD WITHIN. I'M PLACING AN ORDER FOR A 2ND COPY SO IN MY OLD AGE I AM NOT WITHOUT WHEN I NEED A LITTLE REMEMBERENCE.

My grandparents thought this book was great, but I think it appeals more to older people than young. I found that many references were gender specific ("the measure of a man" etc) and dated ("Godspeed" who says that?). I am a Christian and agree with the guiding PHILOSOPHY behind most of the phrases, but I think the actual WORDING of the book obscures its usefulness. As a researcher I was annoyed that the book does not attribute sources to any of these phrases, either.
A wonderful, insiteful, thought provoking book. March 3, 1998
This compilation of writings, by some famous and some "not so famous" writers, is humorous and thought provoking. The book is great reference material for presentations, and as an aid in everyday life.
