the joy of sex October 18, 2007 Johnny O'Dare (Somerset, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I read this book and found it to answer numerous questions about the health aspects of sexuality and it gave good views on the various types of sexuality in societies. Although, despite it being written by a psychiatrist and the book having been around for thirty years, I found it to be somewhat misleading on its target reader. At some points in the book it is unclear if it is addressing men or women. This is a significant flaw.
Truly, deeply awful. January 12, 2004 13 out of 28 found this review helpful
WHY do people still buy this book? There are tons of sexy sex guides on amazon, and this is still the top seller! WHY?! My wife bought me it for Christmas - I'm still digesting that subtle message... and I've put it straight on ebay! With the new revisions it should be retitled '101 ways to get an STD' as that's all it talks about! In a mature loving relationship, I think a 21st century guide should be the order of the day, lets leave this stuff to the baby boomers!
Out of date December 27, 2003 8 out of 16 found this review helpful
The first thing which the experienced reader gleans from the index of this book is that voyeurism is "OK" but anal sex is well off-limits. That is according to the creed of Dr Alex Comfort. Apart from being struck by the tastefullness of the numerous pen-and-ink renditions of a thoroughly decent couple in the act of copulation, was fascinated by the chasisty and circuitousness of the language employed. I find it disturbing that any adult finds anything of interest in this book. In the time spent reading it, you could be discovering all (and more) of the sexual menu it describes. So instead, reader, skip the starter and head straight for the main course.
Science or Sex December 10, 2002 9 out of 20 found this review helpful
If you are looking for a book with intelligent sexual scientific references, well you have found it. This book is absolutely rich and wealthy in explanatory techniques, positions, tools, etc...! The downside is the photographic scenes, they are not as rich as the explanations. They are just quick crayones with a few stylish-hidden-nakedness photos. Better pictures would surely give more values to this book.
Everything you will ever want to know about sex... ;-)) April 9, 2001 44 out of 49 found this review helpful
I first bought this book when I was a naive, horny sexually uneducated teenager. It was (and in my humble opinion, still is) the best book I could ever have read in order to fill in the many blanks in my eductation. This book runs the sexual gamut from A to Z, filling in the curious on everything from basic social biology, complexhuman interactions, and advice on - gasp! - SEX, and LOVE as well, surprising as it may sound. One note which gets sounded throughout the book is that while sex might be good, very good, great, or reiligiously toe-curling in the orgasm department, it gets even better, and deeper, in the context of a loving relationship. Speaking from personal experience, I can concur that fulfilling sex and love combined are two of the best things in the world - all I need to do is find them again! Despite having been written many, many years ago, The Joy Of Sex remains as fresh and relevant today as it did when it was first published all those years ago. The sheer universality of this fantastic volume stands out wherever you happen to dipinto it to read, as I still do, although recent reprints have added relevant information in the recent light of HIV and AIDS. The message remains the same, however. That good sex, done safely and consensually, with a loving partner will enhance your life and your love life equally - a goal well worth striving for! What are you waiting for? Go and buy this book! It's the best book on love and sex I have ever read- what better recommendation can I give? David.
