spell-binding October 8, 2008 Geoff Lowe (Hull, E.Yorks, UK) What an original tale of obsessive love, constantly twisting and turning. The details fleshing out the bizarre and threatening scenarios are spell-binding. This is a disturbingly creepy story with a plot like a spider's web, drawing us in and tantalizing us as we frantically try to find a way out. Sophie Hannah is a lovely poet. In Hurting Distance, she is a multi-talented thriller writer with a deep understanding of multi-faceted human nature and how it impacts on us. Sophie Hannah can wring more out of a wet tea bag than you could ever imagine. P.S. I did like the way she mentioned (just over half-way through the book): "The only pub -- that served seven kinds of Timothy Taylor beer." The timing was perfect - and the thought of it gave me a glow.
Unfulfilled promise September 20, 2008 Dominic Swayne (London) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Started marvellously -- extremely suspenseful, the toxically obsessive heroine done very well -- up till p.75 I did believe this was going to be one of the best psychological thrillers I had ever read. Then, sadly, the whole thing started unravelling. It was all too much -- the hyper-realism clashing repeatedly with the Gothic structure of the novel -- the issue (rape) too earnestly, too hysterically over-stated -- rampant emotions becoming a bore -- the book self-indulgently over-long.
Fantastic July 11, 2008 sl wiltshire One of the best thrillers i have read in a long time, and original too. I couldn't put this book down and was sad to finish it!
Queen of crime fiction July 8, 2008 K. Vadaszffy As Little Face was so good, I had high expectations with Hurting Distance. And Sophie Hannah doesn't disappoint with this page-turning, gripping and amazingly written suspense thriller. Parts of this book are very nasty, but this makes the tale even more captivating. You can almost feel Naomi's pain. If I had to pick the best crime writer around, Sophie Hannah would be at the top of my list. Read this and enjoy.
4,5 stars for this book June 3, 2008 Claudia (Almada, Portugal) This was the first book I've read from Sophie Hannah and for me was great debue. This is a story of a woman who loves a man unconditionally even though he's a married man. When he fails one of their encounters, she knows that he's missing and she'll do everything in her power to find him. This is a very good thriller and I was very much surprised through out the book and the ending, that was the best! I couldn't figure it out... Because of this book I'll read more of Sophie, I'm really curious about Little Face and Point of Rescue.
