5 out of 5 stars My first manga   April 26, 2008
S. J. Anderson (Somerset, England)
I've been in to anime for a little while now, and recently decided to give manga a go. I've always liked the art style in American comics so was interested to see what manga was like. Well I've been hearing loads about Death Note recently (and I've ordered the first volume of the anime), so thought for my first manga to give it a try.
IT'S BRILLIANT!!!
The artwork is great, and some panels really stand out thanks to some stunning detail. This first volume introduces some of the main charcaters and the overall plot, as well as the vast power of the Death Note. It's a great start to what I can tell will be a great series (just have to get all the other volumes now:p). I have absolutely no problems with this manga, but there was one thing I was surprised about. I expected it to be like an actual comic, but it's actually just a small paperback book. Nothing wrong wih that though, saves a lot of space!
A brilliant manga and looking forward to purchasing more. Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The best manga in a long time.   April 22, 2008
S. Shaw (UK)
I started following this series when a friend introduced me to the anime when it started airing on Japanese TV. I don't follow anime and manga as much as I used to when I was younger but I still dip into it now and again and the Death Note anime really got me hooked. The animation was gorgeous and the pace was fast and furious. About two weeks ago I was browsing in my local Waterstone's and saw the first book of the manga in the recommended reading section and decided to give it a go. I'm now onto book 7 and I simply can't stop reading. The translation is pretty decent and the books are presented in their original unflipped format which is a big bonus. This is one series that you really shouldn't miss out on, both manga and anime (when it is eventually released over here).

5 out of 5 stars unput-down-able   January 2, 2008

The first volume of Death Note is start of a 12 volume series following Light's life when he picks up a Death Notebook which he can write names into to kill people.

This manga is beautifully drawn and I adore the Gothic style covers. It certainly catches the eye! I wholeheartedly endorse the positive reviews posted so far. The story is well paced and leads you straight into the action. I don't even like the crime genre but was absolutely drawn into the story which is a battle of wits between Light and L.

I really want to pick up the whole series and will be watching the prices carefully. I already want the anime series which hopefully should be released soon in the UK.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent story well told   December 15, 2007
T. R. Alexander (Huntingdon, Cambs, UK)
Although I have never read any manga before I am an avid anime fan and had heard good things about the Death Note manga series so I decided to take the plunge and I must say that it more than lives up to its hype. In the book the Shinigami (Death God) Ryuk intentionally looses his Death Note in the human world where it is found by the genius high school student Light who decides to use it to rid the world of evil but the legendary detective known as L is hot on his heels.

This first volume of Death Note is amazing it is thoroughly absorbing, well drawn and outstandingly written. All the characters are engaging and likable and you can sympathise them all. If this first volume is anything to go by then the rest of the series can only get better and I cannot wait to read them.

Holy-good-gravy I never knew it could be like this!! This is, by far, one of the best written, best drawn things you will ever lay your paws on. If you havent already read it, you must. Trust me, it's like a good, no... fantastic movie that lasts for ages. And it doesnt loose pace, it just gets better. I was so hooked when I started reading it. I was lucky enough to come across it online first, thats where I got my taste for it, it's just... brilliant. Everyone I've shown it too has fallen for it too.

The characters... oh the characters Raito-kun(Light in this translation), I dont care if he's technically evil, HE'S SO COOL!!! And L!! (seen more in later volume) Wow... the selection of characters really is divine, so much lovelyness.... and so sinister at points.

Just enjoy the insane prices Amazon are currently selling Death Note at, 3.86?!! INSANE!!! You simply must buy it. Better than any tv series like it.
