not too sure but ok July 20, 2005 5 out of 37 found this review helpful
I have to admit I'm struggling with this course. All the information's there and easily re-traceable. It has a clear layout and moves at a steady, comfortable pace. The tape is great and essential. It would be really good to have another support book with exercises to test your learning. Maybe it's just not conducive to the way my brain works! I advise you to get a Brazilian Portuguese/English dictionary too as the vocab at the back of the book is good fairly limited.
Very useful - especially for first time study of a language June 23, 2004 9 out of 87 found this review helpful
I found this book an invaluable introduction to Brazilian Portuguese even without the audio counterpart. The way that it is presented in easy to master sections makes it very easy to understand, learn and remember, particularly for a first-time foreign language learner. I also found the content very relevant for travel to Brazil and was able to understand basic dialogue and communicate relatively confidently in basic Brazilian Portuguese when visiting Brazil for the first time.
Not what it is supposed to be October 17, 2003 Arnold Bowman 116 out of 119 found this review helpful
This book is fundamentally the same as the previous edition and has inherited its problems and idiosyncracies. Very annoying is its method (or lack of it). It flits from one thing to another. When you think you are going to get some information on a language point, you get a sentence (or short paragraph) and then the book jumps to something quite different. It doesn't get to grips with anything. You can't learn much. Another annoying feature, more so in this new edition, is the big gap between what you read on the cover and what you find in the book. You spend your money in the belief that you are buying a course that will help you progress quickly beyond the basics (that's what it says on the cover). Then you find out that the course barely covers the basics. I teach the language and have a copy of the book but this is a course I would not recommend.
