The best for beginners yet! November 15, 2004 Koshmar_61 (Elgin, UK) For anyone who has never had any experience with Russian or the Cyrillic alphabet, this course has got to be one of the best for students in this category. The excellent introduction to the alphabet, along with pointers in the Russian people and their customs, practices and regulations, makes this a top quality course for those with the intention of visiting this beautiful country. Obviously a bit too advanced for those of you flashing their PhD's, the rest of us can satisfactorily complete this accesible course and more than adequately get on in any of the former USSR states, where Russian is still spoken. Essential!!
not at all that helpful to a beginner April 21, 2004 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I dont really rate this, it is too academic for my liking (and I have gota PhD!) To start in a new language you need something a bit more basic. And after buying this I would go for an Audio course as you do need tohear the sounds of the language, now I have been to Ukraine 4 times andhad my pronunciation laughted at a couple of times you do need the audioinput.
An outstanding contribution to Russian Language teaching October 24, 1998 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I picked this book up some months ago after not speaking a word of Russian. The book was an excellent introduction to both the language and culture. Having just returned from my first visit to Russia, I found that I could converse confidently in a number of situations. Moreover, the excellent insight into the unique Russian customs meant I never put my foot in it!!
