I bought this as a Napoleonic enthusiast without any real expectation it would make a read, choosing instead to use it as a work of reference, but after reading the book it is fascinating in ways that other works just cannot compete with. Use it for reference, but it is that rare reference work that can be pored over time and again like a favourite novel.
