| Customer Reviews:
Real people, real history August 27, 2005 Mr. G. M. Williams (Peterborough, Great Britain) Shows the heroic qualities which led the Chinese Communists to victory. Also the human suffering and sometimes betrayal involved in the process. I won't try to summarise; read the book and find out about 'Red Amazons' and women who came back from forced concubinage but found they were mistrusted by former comrades. The authors don't seem hugely well informed, supposing that Beijing used to be called 'Peiping'. The older transliteration was Peking; 'Peiping' was the official name under the Kuomintang because the real name means 'Northern Capital' and they didn't dare try to rule from there. Despite this, it is a very readable book, and a window on an interesting area of history. The Long March is at least as interesting as D-Day or Dunkirk, was a vital part of the anti-Fascist war, but is barely known about in the West.
