Excellent! October 16, 2004 Florence Nightingale (London) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
Clear, concise, informative, this book covers all the questions you might have. For example, we wanted to know the difference between a Sixth-Form college and a College of Further Education - nobody could tell us but the answer, and many others, is to be found here in the first section of the book. The different qualifications our kids take today are clearly explained both to you and to them, as are their pathway options. The second section is composed of the more traditional list of possible careers and potential earnings. The first part, however, is why I give it 5 stars. I bought another 2 'career' books which were wishy-washy compared to this. The only negative point was that the font was a bit too small for comfortable reading.Highly recommended, it is the book to buy if you and your youngster want what we did - facts.
Wonderful ideas in this book! January 26, 2002 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
Reviewing many career guidance books, I found this one to be quite good. Another really terrific book for those of us who are at a crossroads and don't know where to turn, is Finding a career that works for you, by Fellman. It is a self-help guide that you can do at home to gain career ideas. My whole class at college used it. It's logical and clear. What I loved about it was that I could take little tests right in the book that led me to make some decisions.
An excellent reference book -for parents, students, teachers October 6, 1999 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
This first edition by careers writer Barbara Buffton has an introduction on the education system and government initiatives. This is followed by a section aimed at students explaining how to prepare for a career. I like the advice to avoid making any decisions based on what your friend wants to do. The author is clearly aware of the difficulties young people face in making these sorts of decisions. This introduction to the main section of the guide suggests using it as an "ideas generator" to find something that might appeal. A helpful list of common school subjects and the sort of career in which they might be useful will be invaluable for those times when you are faced with a student asking what he or she can do with geography and your mind goes blank. Each entry comes with its Careers Library Classification Index reference, easing the task of researching information from the school careers library or careers service. A glossary at the end of the book makes you realise how many acronyms we use in education. As well as the index there is a list of useful addresses given by each career area.
