5 out of 5 stars Wise, witty, howlingly funny   January 15, 2004

Funnier even that "The Witch-Cult in Western Europe", this exercise in disgraceful foppery and debonair decadence deserves a place on every gentleman's mantleshelf, next to his opium pipe. It is wise, witty, howlingly funny and the perfect antidote to a journey by Virgin trains.

Ever since I was handed a copy of this book's predecessor, the Chap Manifesto, by an agent of the CAD (Confederacy of Anarcho-Dandyists, for that is the technical name for these freedom fighters of our times), I and many others have been converted by the dedication, insight and wit of Messrs Temple and Darkwood. Chappism is an idea whose time is coming. We shall rise up (not too early in the morning, mind you) and genteely remove from the streets all those wearing brand labels with clothing attached, those whose ear "phones" issue loud hissings like vipers in our public places and all the other innumerable vile hordes which stalk our nation's beloved paving stones. Then, when the Manifesto's aims are achieved, the triumphant Chaps shall implement this tome throughout society (besides some kind of sadly necessary lumpen officitariat, who shall be kept hidden behind a tasteful velevt curatin of some sort). All shall hail David Niven with the sacraments of snuff, gin & tonic and lapsang souchong.
