It worked great for my academic team!!! June 24, 1999 My whole team academic team studied from this book. It is quick and easy to learn a thourough description for a wide subject. We used it and won the State Championship this year.
A must-have for Jeopardy fans & other curious people April 27, 1998 *A Writer's Companion* works well as a starting point for researching subjects and an ending point for settling arguements. A gift from Rubin to writers, reseachers, teachers and editors, this book keeps true to its name and provides page after page of names, dates and other information you only thought you'd never need to know. The lists are extensive and the subjects are very logically organized. The list of inventions and their dates of conception is a goldmine! *AWC* is a welcome partner to any almanac and a solid investment for anyone who wants a more comprehsive reference (home) library.
close, but not quite an indispensible reference work May 2, 1997 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I enjoyed reading this book very much. Its contents are varied and exhaustive, yet quick. However this book can not stand on the reference shelf alongside a good almanac, or the "New York Public Library Desk Reference". In terms of its contents the book is erratic. Some sections like "Native American Tribes", and "Prominent Members of Congress" feel complete, that is, the list is both extensive in regards to both number and individual detail. Other areas require either more entries (the entire sports section) or the individiual entries each need a bit more info ("A guide to the Ruins"). This book is meant to be a quick and easy reference for information of interest to writers. However I believe that most will use the book more for free-time reading for enjoyment rather than as an invaluble information resource.
