5 out of 5 stars An interesting and intimate view of one man's war   September 26, 1999
Business Academic (UK)
This is an interesting and intimate view of one man's experience of a war. What makes it stand out among other collections of WW1 family histories is that, firstly, it is centred on the forgotten war, or the "sideshows" of the war. When most of us think of the Great War, we think of the Western Front. This book makes us aware of the desperate and awful struggles of troops in other theatres, such as Mesopotamia and Palestine. Secondly, the book shows the relationship between the fighter and the non-combatant. I find it extraordinary that Elsie (the recipient of the letters) had these letters - no doubt infrequent, waterstained, lost or misdirected - as her *only* lifeline to the man she loved for six years.

The edition is beautiful and the letters are set in their context by an accomplished commentary. For all students of the Great War this is to be recommended. For students of the First World War's "sideshows", it is essential reading.
