4 out of 5 stars Empress Eugenie's secret   July 26, 2008
History addict (UK)

I was most impressed with this book, it is very informative and certainly convinced me about the voracity of the secret by the amount of research that had obviously been done. Clearly an awful lot of work had gone into checking and cross checking all the sources. Apart from Empress Eugenie's secret itself it gives a very interesting overview of the lives of the "great and the good" of the 18th and early 19th century, clearly they are not at all what I would have expected! It made me realise how ignorant I am about the period and made me want to find out a lot more about it. My only critism is that I would have found it helpful to have had visual representations (ie family trees) of both the Cartlidges and the Empresses families as I got a bit confused at times with the different generations.
