Highly reccomended April 13, 2008 M. Linford (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book is fantastic for anyone wishing to find out more about what it's like to work in print journalism. It covers all aspects from entry to getting ahead and journalistic responsibilities. The style is entertaining with personal anecdotes and doesn't shy away from the less desirable parts of journalism which is helpful if you hope to pursue a career in this sometimes infamous profession!
magnificent: booker prize calibre October 12, 2005 1 out of 13 found this review helpful
This is the best book on journalism ever written. Moody and haunting it describes the author's long journey from a humble upbringing to the very pinnacle of the second oldest profession. acclaimed around the world for his reporting skills and then for his abilities to turn around the ailing Telegraph companies Mr Fletcher has done it all. he writes with an angelic, subtle yet firm, touch. he has awesome brain power and is also modest and funny. to me he is almost the perfect man. from his photograph i would put him at no more than late 30s, square of jaw and firm of frame, a man of almost feminine masculinity if such a creature could be said to exist, and yet i read he is a complete man in his late 40s with a female wife and children.to me this came as a surprise and a tad of a disappointment. i had no idea he was so mature since he writes with such nerve tingling dash and joie des vivres I hail the arrival of a major literary talent and cannot wait to meet Mr fletcher at a book signing! i urge all whom relish great writing to buy this wonderful and sensual book.
a special treat October 5, 2005 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is one of those rare and precious books that informs, entertains and illuminates previously murky waters. what makes for a Top Reporter asks Mr Fletcher? He points to the key attributes requisite for any Top Reporter and explains how people such as myself, kindly, considerate, modest and sometimes plain soft and sentimental must harden up if we are to become a Top Reporter. He says he too was once a softie. now he has a mind of steel. sentiment is not fot him. also being fit in a bodily sense ios important. hence the keep fit section at the back of the book showing how to turn my flabby abs into steel like structures. also the recipes are tempting. it is a holistic approach and none the worse for that. i will set about becoming a Top Reporter with renewede vigour. Lest anyone doubt this to be a great book they should read it. It is a guide to Life as well as to becoming a Top Reporter. I cannot thank Mr Fletcher enough for his wisdom and exercises.
a dream come true October 4, 2005 1 out of 8 found this review helpful
before reading this book i feared the worse. not being good with words i thought i would not have what it takes to be a top journalist. wrong and wrong again declaims kim fletcher. if you have wit, guile and are not afraid to trick people the world is your oyster. look at me says kim with wicked humor. i came from nowhere to make it to the top of the greasy pole armed with no more than ambition and beguiling good looks. i too have a certain carisma like kim and now believe i can go all the way like him. i will shed the bagagge of a conscience and go for it for what matters in journalism is getting to the top. i am so grateful to him for having written this rippingly good book. no one is going to stand in my way. not my friends or family. i have told my fiancee she must wait for me while i make my way in the world. she has told me she is prepared to wait on condition i get my first job on a newspaper before Xmas. Wish me luck! It is long way from issuing parking tickest to writing about events. i know i can do it with the help of friends and family! i will keep kim's book by my bed as an inspiration!
