Fantastic September 25, 2008 evicka (UK) I'm a final year French Studies student and I love this book! At this stage everyone expects you to know all of the rules and this book has been a great help to me. I would say it is a book for the more advanced student, intermediate and above. For complete beginners I would recommend the BBC French grammer book, which I own as well and they are both brilliant.
Awful May 14, 2008 Mr. T. G. Bridge 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am currently doing my finals and this book was recommended by our university as the best around. I couldn't possibly disagree more. Many of us are in total agreement that it is overcomplicated and difficult to use in pretty much every sense. The index is useless, I'll give you an example...was looking today to revise the use of lequel/lesquels etc so went to the page given and it was a short section on their use in questions. To find the actual section you had to turn to relative pronouns - something that anybody starting out would not have the first idea about. Better grammar books would deal with any topic all at once rather than having one section on page 5 and the other on 205. Can't disagree that the book is exhaustive, but it is for that reason that it seems over complicated and extremely difficult to use. My advice would be to buy a much simpler laid out grammar book as in the long run it is more beneficial. My version of this has just been thrown at the wall in frustration
Brilliant: Thorough, well structured, clear and readable. January 7, 2004 Malcomtent (London UK) 59 out of 59 found this review helpful
As an intermediate French student I have found this book to be invaluable as a reference.Although I don't think it is meant to be used as a main textbook I find it possible to read it as such. I have never looked for something and not found it and the examples are well laid out and pretty exhaustive. In short I have never been happier with any language purchase.
Simple to follow with easy explanations of grammer rules June 12, 2002 39 out of 50 found this review helpful
This book is excellent with simple explanations of the grammer rules and plenty of good examples of the rules in action.
