5 out of 5 stars To Dakar   June 26, 2008

For those with an interest in the Dakar Rally (particularly the motorcycle part of the event), this is a very good read. This account of the first Canadian to complete the Dakar is well written, easy to read and fast paced like the event itself. I read this one in a day as I could not put it down. It gives a good insight into the preparations for the event, the motivation/mentality required to take part and the generally sporting camaraderie among the participants. There is information on the famous competitors and history of the event as well as good descriptions of the landscape of the countries on the route with interesting social/political comments. The author makes an interesting comparison between his own affluent Western lifestyle and the poor but possibly happier lifestyles of some of the locals he encounters en route. This is not just a motorsport book.
