holt at her darkest. November 11, 2004 S. Hapgood 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Many of Victoria Holt's critics dismissed her as a trashy lightweight author. They don't know what they are talking about. Her stories may be pure escapism (and what's wrong with that?), but some of her subject matter was very dark indeed. In this one talented artist Kate Collinson is abducted and raped by the ruthless Baron de Centeville in Normandy. We are left under no illusions about what has happened to her, as Holt describes it in no uncertain terms herself. For a lot of people this is where she went too far. Readers of gothic romances like their "heroes" to be strong and dynamic, but we don't exactly want Mr Rochester turning into Jack the Ripper! The Baron is a thoroughly detestable character, there is no doubt about it. Until quite some way through the book he doesn't even show the slightest glimmer of anything enticing about him. I couldn't help feeling he should have been banged up in the Bastille like the Marquis de Sade! When I first read this book many years ago I couldn't get beyond the abduction scenes, it made me too angry. But having recently rediscovered Holt, I decided to give it another go. I was glad I did. This is actually a first-rate adventure story, with Kate coping with bringing up her son single-handedly, forging a successful career for herself in an era when it wasn't the done thing for well-brought-up young ladies to do so, and then finding herself living in Paris during the siege of 1870. It still jars a bit that Kate goes to the Baron at the end, but you have to accept that this is the person she is, and some women are like that. And Holt's writing is always a pleasure to read.
The best book you can read!!! May 21, 2001 Emma Chambers (esc1986@hotmail.com) (England, Hertfordshire) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book is a romantic thriller. It starts off with Kate Collinson the heroin of the story helping her dad paint minitures because her goes blind. They go to paint for a very important comte in France, Kate thinks she is gtting away with her plans , but really the comte hasd plans for her!! This book is great and i would strongly advise you reading it.
