Good...but not that good? February 12, 2006 Roman Clodia (London) Having read the rave reviews I have to admit I was a little disappointed with this book. The hero was lovely but the heroine was an irritating little minx! The author had clearly based the hero's personality and situation on Francis Crawford of Lymond, but doesn't come even up to Dorothy Dunnett's ankles when it comes to writing. Not a 'keeper' for me.
Storytelling at its best with characters that will charm.... September 27, 1999 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
In recent months I have found myself becoming rather jaded with the dross that passes itself off as romance these days but Angel Rogue restored my faith in good storytelling. What a fantastic ride! Neither hero nor heroine (Robin and Maxie) are the usual "perfect" protagonists; they both have faults and issues they need to deal with. Maxie is small, feisty and independent and Robin is simply charming. The way the author delves into his psyche and shows us, the readers, some of the darkness inside caused by his many years as a spy during the Napoleonic wars, is wonderful. The tension and resentment between Robin and his brother was also well handled and best of all, realistic! Of course there is resentment and envy between siblings....its called life! The scene where they talk and let it all out was very very touching and brought a lump to my throat (with this genre, thats not a common occurence!). Like the previous reviewer, I too found the fact that Robin and Maxie knew that they wanted each other early on and didn't fight all the time, a nice change. The adventures and mishaps they encounter getting to London were fun and the pace of the book never felt rushed or slow. The end, in my opinion was neither too quick nor too rushed. I actually guessed what had happened to Maxie's father (although not why) and although it might seem tame by our standards, back in those times it was a major thing (I'm trying not to give it all away). All in all, this book will be read many many times and will stay on my keepers shelf for a long time to come. Not all Putney's books appeal to me, although "The Rake" with its serious handling of alcoholism in Regency times was wonderful (and had a gorgeous hero!), however, I do intend to read others because if they are even half as good as this one was, then they will be alot better than the majority out there. My only major criticism would be to all authors out there...a)check the geography if your book is set in Britain, b)not too much modern language please!! and c)fall is an American word...its called AUTUMN here in Britain (and has been for many centuries!).
Not your run-of-the-mill romance July 8, 1999 What a pleasant change of pace! Instead of reading yet another romance where the 2 main characters are fighting each other for the first 2/3 of the book, Robin and Maxima actually get along! And what an interesting adventure they have as they travel to London, searching for the cause of her father's death. I found this book quite entertaining although I was a little disappointed with the ending. It didn't seem very well thought out since there weren't threads/connections back to the first part of the book. All of the details and explanations were unloaded on the reader at the end. Even so, the story of their journey made this book worthwhile to read.
This was just an awesome book! April 22, 1999 I've only recently discovered Mary Jo Putney and what a wonderful discovery she is! I've read all but one of the "Fallen Angel" series, and where each installment has characters that become near and dear, I have to say this was absolutely my favorite. The emotional rapport and sexual tension between Robin and Maxi is as intense as anything I've read by more steamy authors. And I love the way Ms. Putney interweves the other "Fallen Angels and their wives" into each new story. Just awesome!
Mary Jo Putney is a writer of extraordinary talents! August 29, 1998 I will read any book published with Mary Jo Putney's name on it. She has a gift for developing very special characters and for making strong characters interdependent in a most unique and positive way. I look forward to her next publication.
