disappointed November 19, 2008 Mrs. Sa Parkinson (swansea, wales, UK) i have read nearly all of Patricia Scanlan's books and enjoyed them. this one however was a totally pointless story with an absolutely rubbish ending. she delves very in depth into the characters lives ranging decades and the end appears all of a sudden as if when she was writing it she became bored and rushed it. the story itself is quite good but she totally ruined it with the ending. her worst book by far
Beware - old book!!! January 20, 2008 L. Daeppen this is NOT a new book, it was actually published in 1991!!!! so, chances are, you have already read it! Just because it has a new cover on it. At least the title is the same! I really hate when they change the title and pretend it is a new book!
Enjoyable October 10, 2006 Claire Raven (Hull England) It took me a while to really get into this book but once I did I was engrossed. I thought the ending could have been better though!!
Just ok July 13, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Although I did quite enjoy this book I found it a bit hard to follow as there were so many characters introduced very closely in the opening chapters. The ending is a bit rushed and disappointing. Not one of her best books
Not bad if you like story better than character! May 28, 2002 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
This is an entertaining enough book. But you can't help thinking the author might have done better to tell the stories of a few people fully rather than half telling the stories of a lot of people. Many many stereotypes here - clearly the audience are meant to boo and cheer at various points. There is no attempt to understand the motivations of characters and some of the characters it is clear the author has no sympathy for at all whilst others get sympathy without the reader really understanding why they deserve it. People are either good or bad and that is that. But for all that if you wanted something undemanding to read on the beach the stories themselves are interesting enough. The ending by the way feels as if someone told the author she had one week to get the damned thing finished!
