Always a pleasure October 15, 2007 Joanne D'Arcy (Portsmouth, UK) Another lovely heart warming tale from Joan Jonker. I feel when I read these books, that I am drawn into their lives and exerpeince what they are all going through. The story centres around Ann, George, Maddy and Tess. I was rather annoyed with Ann's attitude to life at first, and felt that she had her nose in the air the constant time. Her attitude to their living standards, schooling for Maddy & Tess and also wrapping the youngest, Tess in cotton wool - made you are heart melt even more, when she goes through the greatest change in the story. It just proves that having great friends (Lizzie, Gwen)and making new friends from all walks of life (even if it means perservering with Nellie who on the outside appears to be the 'neighbour from hell') makes a greater person than Ann started out as. There is no ending to this book, it just ceases to stop being written, because you know that the family and their friends in Liverpool are just going to carry on exactly as they are giving love and warmth and sticking up for themselves and those they think deserve it and enjoying whatever life throws at them. Good Luck to them all!
Another Excellent Read by an Excellent Author May 17, 2001 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
George and Ann Richardson and their 2 daughters Tess and Maddy, are an average family and have to deal with the ups and downs of everyday life. This Book has several beneath the surface meanings and shows you should not always judge a book by its cover. This is true in the case of Nellie Bingham who is a neighbour who nobody really understands, but the neighbours soon find that she is someone they can rely on. I have read most of Joan Jonker's Books and find that this book is another excellent read from an excellent dedicated author.
Brilliant read - a different format but non the less great May 12, 2001 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A wonderful read, the characters are warm and you feel at once like they are old friends, as with all of Joans other books...Joan is a wonderful author and I recommend this book to all readers.
Light-hearted, easy reading April 1, 2001 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have read every one of Joan Jonker's books and totally disagree with the previous review. Whilst I will admit that this does not have the best plot of her novels in order to appreciate it fully you need to read her previous novels as the character development takes place in them. I personally find her style very easy reading and light-hearted especially considering the timescale in which they are set. I await the next one from her "pen".
I nearly shed tears! March 7, 2001 2 out of 8 found this review helpful
Although I am an avid reader of a wide range of books I had never met Joan Jonker before. How I wish I was still unaware of this author's work. The book had nothing to recommend it - the plot was undeveloped and symplistic, time scales unrealistic and the characters stereotypical. If I could have awarded no stars I would have done so. This is the first time I have ever sent a book review to Amazon but if it prevents even one person wasting time or money on this book it will have been worthwhile.
