4 out of 5 stars First in the Immortals After Dark Series   June 29, 2008

(Actually I think the short story The Warlord Wants Forever in the Playing Easy to Get anthology is technically first, though some of that story takes place at the same time as AHLNO.)

After enduring over a century of being repeatedly burned to death and then being resurrected, Lachlain MacRieve is perhaps not in the best frame of mind when he escapes to search for his destined mate. He is even more upset to learn his destined mate is the (half) vampire Emmaline, especially as it was the vampire Horde who chained him up in front of a column of eternal fire in the first place. So begins the rocky road of their romance. And just when it seems they have sorted their problems out, Emmaline's past finally catches up with them.

I know some people have a problem with Lachlain, taken at face value, his actions don't show him in the best light. To begin your courtship of someone by sexually assaulting them, is perhaps not the best way to start. But I think this has to be placed in context:- his attitudes are 150 years out of date, he has been tortured in a way that is hard for us to understand, repeatedly being burnt to death with no hope of reprieve - for over a century, so at the beginning of the book he is not in his own mind. He's running on instinct and fury.
Is his behaviour acceptable - no. But I think it's understandable. Plus, this is a man prepared to rip off his own leg to get to his mate.

Emmaline on the other hand is a bit wimpy in the beginning. Half vampire/half valkyrie, she seems to have more of the weaknesses of the two races rather than their strengths. It is through her relationship with Lachlain that she finally begins to stand on her own two feet and ultimately takes her destiny into her own hands.

Lachlain had to be with someone who would call him on his behaviour. Initially he sees and refers to her as 'vampire' and not Emma, as long as he does this, she's just a thing to him - one he can do anything to because she's a vampire not a person. For a lot of the book there is this understandable distrust between them. Not helped by the fact that Lachlain decides what's in Emma's best interests for her to know or not know.

"...Now she believes I'm a liar. Probably because I lied to her."

And whilst most of their confusions could be sorted out if they'd only talk to each other - it's very difficult for either of them to take that first step.

This book sets up the world and mythology of the Lore. Besides Lachlain and Emma we're introduced to numerous characters - Nix, Kaderin, Daniela, Lucia, Bowen - who has some of the best lines during his short appearance in the story. But Kresley Cole manages to keep all of her balls in the air. At the same time teasing us with frustrating hints about who might make appearances in future books.

Each character is well drawn and whilst we might not always like the way in which they behave, it's possible to understand why they choose to behave in that way.

Highly recommended

2 out of 5 stars Not sure how it got such good reviews   June 16, 2008

Maybe I've been influenced by my other recent reading material (the Dark Lover series by J R Ward and Touch the Dark by Karen Chance - both of which I loved) but this went straight into my 'to be sold' box.

It's a realy shame as I loved the idea - half-vampire and half-Valkyrie Emmaline falling for a werewolf - and there are some great characters. But for me, the writing style really let it down. Too much about how the hero and heroine were feeling and not enough corresponding detail about the rest of this interesting world. The last part of the story hinged around the family of the heroine not believing her story, which I don't think says much about them. And once that's settled then there is only one sentence to describe their wedding. It all seemed quite inconsistent and annoyed me enough to not want to read any more of the series. But hey, lots of other people don't seem to be bothered by that, so I'll leave the sequels to them.

I received this book on saturday and finished it on monday! it was a hard one to put down, not the erotica I have gotten used to reading, and there could have been a little more sex :-), but overall I liked the story, it read very well and the main character, Lachlain, wow, what a man - if only he were real! I would have succumbed to his will alot earlier he he!!

I bought this book after reading the reviews, and I'm happy to say I wasn't disappointed!
The story takes you straight to the action and keeps up the pace for the rest of the book. Lachlain from the description sounds delicious, and Emmaline is very sweet but discovers her inner strength as the story develops. The love scenes are HOT HOT HOT (made me sorry I'm single ha ha)but you can really see how the bond between them grows even as "family" threatens to tear them apart.
I have already ordered books 2 & 3 and can't wait for them to arrive. This was my first Kresley Cole book but it certainly won't be my last!!

My god, what a guy! Having read five of Kresley Coles Immortals books now, and I have loved each and everyone of them, I still find myself comparing all the hero's to Lachlain. I'm afraid I have fallen a little in love with this character and find that with Kresley Coles books this is an occupational hazard. I recommend these books to anyone who wants to try mystical romance for the first time, you won't be disappointed.
