Chemistry For You June 4, 2004 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I enjoy using the . . . For You series, both as a learning aid myself and with classes that I teach. I find Chemistry for You a comprehensive book, packed full of well presented information in a variety of forms (graphs, charts, prose, bullets points etc.). The book cuts down on photocopying as there are experimental methods within the text, and exam style and past paper questions at the end of every chapter. The structure of the book makes the text a logical progression through Chemistry GCSE, Dual and single award. With the addition of the teacher pack, which includes photocopiable OHP slides, exam question answers, techno notes and hazard evaluations of all practicals, I think that the Chemistry For You book is a good text to use for chemistry studies.
Comprehensive but far from concise April 26, 2004 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
It remains, however unfortunately, that at GCSE, preparation for the examrather than a development of the subject is the greatest priority.Apparently in an attempt to be both concise and informative, Chemistry forYou misses both, landing somewhere in the middle, making for a somewhatconvoluted textbook. Whilst comprehensive, the book is saturated withattempts at mild humour. This is a pity because it is for the most parthighly patronising ("Is this book really for GCSE?") and can only, in myopinion, lead to disillusionment. The text itself is extremely direct, mostly constituted of short sentences and annoying rhetoric. If the timeis invested, however, the necessary information may be gleaned.
A really useful teaching and learning resource October 30, 2001 18 out of 20 found this review helpful
As I teacher of KS4 science I found this book really useful for both lower and higher ability science groups. There is lots of background information and history for more able students, and a good selection of questions. There are also plenty questions from GCSE papers.
