Brilliant September 27, 2008 Sonia (UK) I can't decide if this is my favourite book in the series or if Lover Unbound is. Ward seems to be moving way from straight romance and focusing more on plot which won't be to everyone's taste but personally I prefer it. I think maybe it's time to stop marketing these books are purely romance novels, it's not fair on those who only want to read romance novels to keep marketing them as such and I think it would open her books up to a much wider audience. I loved this book, i couldn't put it down! There's so much going on and as always it's wonderfully written.
I don't know what she was aiming for with this one? September 21, 2008 C. E. Batt (Halstead Essex) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love J R Ward, I have loved all her books and was soooooo excited about the release of LE, however after reading the reviews from the US site I was not in a hurry to read this latest instalment. A good weekend weather wise and a lack of avalaible fiction on the shelf that I have not read and I thought why not lets give it a try. I really am at a loss for words, although I still enjoyed the book I have to agree that romance this is not, a good story it is. Read up on Lora Leigh, Angela Knight and Christine Feelhan before this read and whack yourself out on hot romanace and J R Wards latest installment will make a nice change. However I find it hard to beleive that this is the same author who wrote passionalty about Wrath, Zadist and Rhage. What happened along the way, did she think the plot was too formatic? It was good but please don't sell your fans down the river, if we want romance then please deliver, don't sell us short.
I'm Very Disappointed - But I Had To Give It 3 Stars... September 11, 2008 Imani (Bedfordshire) I hardly know what to say! I was hooked from Dark Lover to Lover Revealed. I don't know what's happened. She just seems to have 'lost her Mojo' somehow. Maybe she's gathering her strength for next lot. WHY I'M DISAPPOINTED? 1) Because the storyline was everyone else's EXCEPT Phury's. I agree with some of the other reviewers that it read like a 'middle book' or bridge to the next in the series. His story was - I hate to say this - BORING! 2) Because Cormia just worked my nerves until she started standing up for herself, but that took SOOOO LOOOONG! 3) Because I think the Wizard was someone we should have been introduce to a little earlier on in the series. I didn't like that surprise. 4) Because I ended up having little empathy with Phury's character, except when he was treated badly by his family as a child and maybe he feels he has nothing to hang on to since he no longer had to take care of Zsadist. 5) Because he started taking heroin. In Lover Awakened, he almost succumbs to it and we breathe a sigh of relief when John Matthew inadvertently stops him. He's so grateful, so it's surprising when it pops up so vehemently again - and becomes a feature! Doesn't make sense... 6) Because he's thrown out of the Brotherhood - until he gets help! Everyone else gets help within the Brotherhood. Why couldn't the Brothers have tied him up in the Tomb and made him go Cold Turkey? That would have been a great storyline. 7) Because this Lassiter (Angel) bod, thinks he can just 'join' the BDB. Who is he? 8) Because the Scribe Virgin is becoming somewhat redundant. Nah! Doesn't work for me... This book just didn't stand alone like the first four did. It's a continuation of Lover Unbound. One reviewer thought it was 'HOT!' Good lord, woman! What have you been reading!!?? Have you read the first four in the series!? You'd spontaneously combust!! WHY I GAVE IT 3 STARS? 1) Because of the 3 new 'little brothers': John Matthew, Blay and Qhuinn. I'm looking forward to their adventures - especially regarding the Lash situation. 2) Because Rhev's dark weirdness has made me curious. How does he fit in? 3) Because I'm dying to read Qhuinn's story. Can hardly wait to see what JR will come up with for THAT one... 4) Because JR is STILL the UNDISPUTED QUEEN of erotic suspense. That 'thing' between John Matthew and Xhex? Now THAT was hot!!! Apologies for the lengthy review but I had to end on a good note...
Cerise September 10, 2008 Cerise (UK) Love the books - writing excellent, characters engaging and eventually the cheesy names grow on you. Personally rather fond of Z and V!
Bring back the romance September 1, 2008 Krystyna Young (Glasgow ,Scotland) I felt really cheated by this book. The romance could probably have been all covered in one chapter such was it's rarity. This book was much darker than the previous books. This unwelcome (for me) trend manifested in V's story "Lover Unbound" which I barely finished reading. In fact put it down several times and the implausible ending made me wish I had stuck to my instincts and gave it up. But this is the Black Dagger Brotherhood a series of novels I used to love! Had always pre-ordered the next book as soon as it was possible and waited impatiently for it's delivery. So loved Wrath and Beth's story and each book thereafter until V's as I have said. Had hoped that this was just a blip but see now that the romance has been sacrificed for intrigue and plot. Can't they all co-exist in the same book? Like other reviewers I found the BDB's treatment of Phury in his hour of greatest need to be unbelievable. These are guys who watch each other's backs who put their lives on the line for each other then when one goes down the road of addiction there is no help offered...pleez! Also another plot development I found unbelievable was the lack of support for John in his turmoil from Mary, Rhage's shellan, who brought him to the care of the Brotherhood in the first place. She had been his confidante and unofficial counsellor and generally looked out for him. Now when he has gone through the change and lost his adopted family- all around the same time- Mary is nowhere to be seen. They live in the same house for godsakes...there is not even a mention of her in this book. She protected him like a tigress before now she doesn't come near him..hello am I the only one who thinks this strange? Also am I missing something re Z's and Bella's baby wasn't this baby mentioned at the end of "Lover Revealed" I distinctly remember Z having both names on his back. Now we are expected to worry along with the characters about the safe delivery of a child we know has been born and that she and her mother are fine, having survived the birth without any problems. Found this strange made me wonder if I had imagined the previous mention of this infant so I checked just to be sure. This review sounds so negative it is a shame, I really am a massive fan of Ms Ward and this series I just feel that in this book I did not get what I signed up for. I did finish this book and did enjoy the development of the young warriors and was able to see the BDB traits appearing in their characters. They do seem much more emotional than the first generation warriors or maybe it is just that they are young and wear their hearts on their sleeves. Not sure where the BDB goes from here, there are so many plot possibilties from this book, but I think romance will be in short supply if this book is anything to go by. Not one with which to start the series.
