A good start to the Darkest Powers trilogy August 14, 2008 normngrey (South, UK) This new book by Kelley Armstrong is much more enjoyable to read than any of her other books. Her change in style was noticeable in Personal Demon, her latest in the Women of the otherworld series. I won't go into the plot much here since it will spoil your fun and also because some of it has been mentioned already by other reviewers. I was pulled into the story very quickly and toward the end I was almost ripping the pages out to find out what was happening next. The ending was a very good twist catching me flat-footed. A good, involving read. Well worth buying.
Great read August 4, 2008 Ms. K. A. Winskill (Cardiff, Wales) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm not a young adult myself so this book wasn't really aimed at my age group, but I love Armstrong's Otherworld series and I couldn't resist picking this up. I wasn't disappointed, either. If you're already familiar with the Otherworld series then you'll figure out what the kids are pretty wuickly, but there are still some genuine surprises. The shocks and descriptions can be pretty gruesome, too. Another hit from Kelley Armstrong! Definately worth reading for fans and newcomers alike.
the summoning by kelley armstrong July 29, 2008 J. howard (england, merseyside) i thought this book was brilliant like all her other books ive bought every one as soon as its out on the shelf i really cant wait for the next my problem is once i start reading thats it im lost in the world and its over to soon kelley really should write faster some times but i guess it takes time to create something so brilliant i must be more pt its so nice to read the begining of powers developed not just straight in there
L.J Smith? July 24, 2008 Ms. A. J. Mccormack (U.K)
I have not yet read this book, but do love Ms Armstrong's other titles. One thing that struck me when reading the synopsis though is that The Summoning sounds surprisingly similar to L.J Smith's YA Dark Vision Trilogy, which if you haven't read please do - I thoroughly recommend them. Anyway would love to know what others think and look forward to reading this new book!
The younger years of the `Women Of The Otherworld' characters. July 11, 2008 Amanda (United Kingdom) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've read & loved every book Kelley Armstrong has wrote to date, so naturally I had to have her first young adult novel as well. It's a great book for adult fans to get a glimpse into how the younger years of `Women Of The Otherworld' characters might have been. I especially love the character Jamie Vegas, so needless to say, I love this. 15 year old Chloe Saunders wakes up one day & starts to see dead people. Yep, just like that. Of course, everyone thinks she's nuts, so she's sent to `recover from her breakdown' at Lyle House, a home for mentally disturbed teens. She's soon diagnosed as a schizophrenic, but we know better. She is a necromancer. Soon it becomes clear that the other patients aren't what they seem either... What's going on with Lyle House? `Young adult novel'. That phrase did make me nervous. I was half expecting to read about Daddy issues, the latest fashion & cute boys, but I can thankfully confirm that isn't the case here. Chloe - the narrator - is not spoiled, whiny or controlled by her hormones. When she is in arguments she think about how she's coming across before answering, she doesn't avenge someone when she has cause to & she says boys are low on her list of concerns. She doesn't make my blood pressure shoot up to a dangerous level.
