The Lost Epic!!! August 19, 2008 Therese Skirving (Scotland) After reading countless pages of reviews on this series I decided this is worth purchasing. I already have books 2 and 3. Unfortunatly Amazon do not have this book in stock. Do not buy from Browns Books. 30 days later and I am still waiting for it.
Enjoyable, engaging, entertaining. Epic. August 4, 2008 Da Rasta (Suffolk) Be warned, concentration is needed when reading this book as subtle comments, expressions and actions are all linked together to create a world of intrigue, tricks an plots. A world full of characters with astonishing depth and character as gods and mortals scheme for power, domination or for pure survival. There are dozens of reviews about this book, which in itself suggests its popularity and with good reason, this book is worth buying. To give a rough summary of events would be a book itself, so I'll just give a few examples of things within the book. There are gods, meddlesome and cruel. There are unlikely heroes with huge depth of character and many dimensions. The book consist of resurrected soldiers thousands of years old, death, sorcery and many twists both surprising and unsurprising. Much of the hostility or amiability displayed between characters is left unexplained, with the occasional glimpse into the past of a character to suggest reasons for actions, beliefs or moods and although this makes it a little harder to get to know a character it does add depth to the book. This book feels like the prologue to an epic fantasy series, suggesting greater things to come. I would highly recommend this to any fantasy reader, and if you do decide to buy it, I suggest getting the next one in the series as it will save the frustration of having to wait!
Awesome book July 1, 2008 Paran Recommended to me by my brother, who told me it was far better than Robert Jordan (as if!), I sat down and after 50 pages told him it was ok, maybe a little too complicated, but not in the same league as Wheel of Time. Half way through I'm hooked, and when I was done I had to agree with him - I was blown away. This is fantasy that geeks you out, kicck serious butt, and is definitely for adults. Erikson drops you in the middle and lets you wade through everything before everything starts to make sense - then he turns things around again! My favourite author.
Complex and Satisfying May 14, 2008 dk (uk) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Not an easy read - let's get that out of the way first. The scope here is massive and original. Secrets are kept right until the last pages and the author rewards you "just enough" throughout the book to keep you turning the pages, although I was frustrated at times due to scarse explanation. I didn't fully understand a lot of what was going on in the book initially, events unfold with little explanation of character motive but it all comes together at the end making it one of the most satifying reads if you've got the patience. If you're a David Eddings or Terry Brooks fan, then maybe this isn't for you - no generic Swords and Sorcery to be found here - but if you like your fantasy gritty and characters that have more than one dimension with rewards more advanced than "generic hero finds generic magic device, defeats generic villain and gets generic princess" then you'll love it.
