Clever Conceit - Very Middling results September 2, 2008 Mark Pearce (UK) In carrying out their various acts of "heroism",the world's superheroes seem not to care about the collateral damage they cause - innocent humans in the wrong place at the wrong time etc etc. Enter the "Boys"- a C.I.A backed covert group of operatives headed by the Butcher whose mandate is to keep them in line and control their capacity for mayhem and large amounts of gratitious sex. Great idea and great art by Darick Robertson and friends but Garth Ennis(Preacher,Punisher,Hellblazer)drops the ball big time.I'm in my 40's and for what ever reason I found the violence pretty tame and not enough of it.In vol 1(issues 1-6)there was too much time spent on Wee hughie- the new member of the team and a dull one at that - and not enough on Frenchie,Mother's Milk and the Female(who might as well have not been there). The subplot involving Starlight's ascension(and of her treatment at the hands of fellow team members) to the elite group of superheroes was far more interesting. Vol 2(issues 7 -14) has even more talk, more of Wee Hughie learning the ropes(that boy is dim),more emphasis on homosexuality(that joke wears thin pretty quickly too) and considering the other reviewers are positively rapturous,I must be 20 years older than them because this is pretty tame stuff. Better to seek out The Pro - shorter, funnier and coherent or Ennis' stuff with The Punisher,Hellblazer because he is slumming it here. Unless you find endless riffs on possible homosexuality and other sexual stuff between superheroes funny(and in theory it could have been)AVOID and don't waste your money.
Epic Ennis July 18, 2008 Gareth Wilson 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
As a fan of Ennis you really can guarantee the quality of not only the story arcs but the graphical nature to which these compendiums pay homage to. Its fun, it's a dark twist on the world to which the characters inhabit and lets face it, if you're fed up with goody two shoes Superhero characters its great to see the fallibility of these paragons of mankind. Ennis does it with spades with his usual dark humour and mind twists his way through the stories. Great fun and to be honest something that I really have to recommend to the older fan of the graphic novel due to the adult nature blended within the story arc. Epic action with an adult twist as Superheroes discover that there's a price for vice and screwing over the little guy.
Garth Ennis at his chaotic best June 5, 2008 Sal Gunduz (UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Brilliant. Great read. Shocking. Funny. Superlatives simply arent enough to describe this. If you thought Preacher was good, you're going to love this one! In a somewhat odd box world of a new pantheon of Supes strutting their stuff(ala Bendis with Powers style) we follow The Boys who go about exacting retribution on these untouchables, these being an interesting mix of; Mockney hardman, a wee Scottish fella, a goth japanese slaughterhouse, a large American called "mothers milk" ! and an eccentric Frenchman. It sounds bizarre, and it is, but it so, so works. The art work is wonderful, the writing is tight and witty, and you will not be disappointed. You'll read it and think "I'm going to re-read that one again".
Boys don't cry! March 19, 2008 Chasamatazz (Bristol) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
The fine art captures the superb action, and as much gritty realism as you can fit in a superhero graphic. A world seen when the rose tinted glasses have been lost. A fantastic idea which has been well crafted, and will leave you drooling for more.
Awesome Stuff December 14, 2007 Shrew (Belfast, N. Ireland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Garth Ennis at his brilliant best. Guts, Gut laughs and simon pegg. If you liked "the preacher" you will love this. A clever and interesting take on the superhero genre with plenty of deep dark humour. Wholeheartedly reccomended! I cannot wait for the next installment! This reeks of quality!
