This is an excellent installment of the Gaunt's Ghosts series.
I have read and re-read all of the novels to date (some 3-4 times)and will continue to do so(I'm re-reading Guns of Tanith at the moment)
This novel is set on the planet of Gereon, a chaos infested world, Gaunt and a hand picked insertion team on a one-way-mission.
The strength of this novel above the previous books is that it is so much darker.
The events that took place in the previous novel, to me seemed to put a harder, gloomier edge to this story.
I also think that cutting off a small team of characters from the regiment and isolating them added an interesting change to the normal style of the Ghosts books.
It had that "60's Western" feel to it, by that I mean putting a group of characters in a isolated position and watching them react to each other (as there are alot of very strong and differing individuals within the group)
A very gloomy and hard edged book that is well worth the read.
As with the whole series, each novel can be read with no previous knowledge of the other books but seems to have even more depth with background knowledge.

My favourite scene was the one where one of the finest warriors the Galaxy has ever produced fires a large flame-thrower into a small wooden hut containing 3-4 of our heroes... and nothing happens to them. The biting realism Abnet brings to this series leaves you on the edge of your seat and this is just one of several similar incidents scattered throughout the book.
Seriously, read something else by Dan Abnet the later instalments of this series do him no justice.

Dan Abnett is a good pulp writer. If you want rip roaring adventure loosely based in the Warhammer 40K universe he's your man. I say loosley based because none of his books feel like they belong in 40K; they could just as easily be set somewhere else altogether. The Gaunt's Ghosts books (or Sharpe in Space) are supposed to depict the poor grunts of the Imperial Guard but never at any single point do you feel that to be the case. I am a fan of Games Workshop so perhaps it is just that such things are glaringly obvious to me.
Anyway, this book is dull and slow. I could not finish it. Maybe true hardcore fans of Sharpe in Space and Abnett will love it, I certainly do and have no intention of bothering to read the ones to come after.

The latest addition to the Ghosts saga has left me divided. The story is about a stealth mission in enemy territory with the target being a 'former'Imperial. The books kicks off quite nice with an excellent description (topology/background) of the battlefield.
The various characters throughout the book are vividly presented as we have come to expect of Dan.
The action is a good mix of stealth and 'straight silver' that should satisfy everyone.
The main drawback is that after a while you are left with a feeling of a 'rambo'story. Noone dies, nor fails... enemies are slaughtered (including chaos marines) by the dozens and the worst the ghosts get are some scratches!I feel as if Dan wants to move into a new era of ghosts stories and based on the latest installment due in november i feel i am right.
