4 out of 5 stars highly entertaining   July 31, 2008

I enjoyed this book very much, reading it twice whithin a three day period.

What I particuly liked was the way the main character, Alaric, is ripped away from his comfort zone and forced to use his wits to survive rather being able to fall back on his tried and tested combat skills and his superior physical abilities. I'm sure that it will be very difficult for him to get back to his fellow Grey Knights after this experience :)

5 out of 5 stars The Character Grows   May 4, 2008
James Minahan (Cornwall, UK)
I have been a big fan of the Grey Knight books although i was put off from this book by some reviews i read about it. Its true this book leads away from the others which drew heavy into squad based team work to take down swarms of deamons but where this book leaves that it moves into the development of Alaric

As Alaric is torn from his battle brothers and thrown onto a world in the Eye of the Storm where he is forced to fight and learn what the Grey Knights do not teach in their training and give up the structured text book codes of combat that is drilled into his head and delve deep into the art of combat to not only survive but to defeat the Deamon Lords of the world who imprisoned him but defeated him before

Though this book isnt like the others it really shows the development of Alaric. I enjoyed this book and finished it quicker then the other two books combined. Not the taste for everyone but i enjoyed it none the less and look forward to see how this experience has shaped him as a Grey Knight in any books that follow

2 out of 5 stars Falls below par   February 26, 2008

I have been an avid fan of the Grey Knight series of books by Ben Counter and still count "Grey Knights" as one of the best books I have read in the Warhammer 40k Universe. However Hammer of Daemons falls way below the line for me. Unlike the other books which have an intricate plot and where the a battle scene between bring together whole squads against the enemy, this book has none of that. There are next to no squad based battles or interaction at all and focuses primarily on the main character. This, for me, is where it largely went wrong as this was one of the main strengths of the other books.

On a plus side the descriptions of Chaos are very good and well thought out with a lot of depth there. The end is very weak and I found it a little disappointing and I found I had questions remaining after I had finished.

Even thought I have given this book 2 stars, it is still work reading as it does set the plot for later books which will undoubtedly be released.

3 out of 5 stars Predictable yet diverting   February 24, 2008

While this doesn't stand up to the earlier Gray Knights books, and the storyline is basically a flat line, it's still well written and exciting in places. Mostly, the problem is what I've coined 'the chaos effect', in that books set exclusively on a chaos world can become monotonous quite quickly due to the repetitive descriptions of blood, torture, death, evil, blood, blood - a problem also suffered by Dead Sky, Black Sun by Graham McNeill.

While the descriptions of chaos can sometimes be quite intricate, this will be an uncomfortably simple story for some, but those who can put aside desire for a winding, multi-faceted plot will find an enjoyable tale of good vs evil. I would have given this four stars if not for some shocking typos later in the book, not half as bad as some I've seen in self-published work but they shouldn't have made it into a professionaly produced novel.
