Not the place to start... February 12, 2005 Franni (Cambridge, UK) 32 out of 33 found this review helpful
If you're new to Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover, this is not the place to start your explorations of her planet. Planet Savers (1962)& World Wreckers (1971)were each two thin paperbacks, both in number of pages and the depth of plot & characterisation. Waterfall was a story of a dozen or so pages tacked onto the end of a later edition of the Planet Savers paperback... Sad that the publishers felt they had to combine these into a volume which will leave new readers disappointed - these early Darkover novels are really now best read just to fill in the background. MZB, fortunately for us all, has written far, far better books since. Put this back on the shelf and treat yourself to the Heritage and Exile trilogy first... I promise you'll get to know and love the characters, so much so that you'll probably read through the whole series plus all the surrounding Friends of Darkover fanfiction and you may eventually come back to this one... Outside the meatier novels in the Darkover series, her Mists of Avalon and The Catch Trap are also excellent reading.
