Thrilling vision of a battle-cracked future June 26, 2008 R. L. Clarke (United Kingdom) Everything about this book is ultra. High-octane doesn't even start to describe the relentless, breathless pace or the continously escalating action. Williams pitches you headlong into this non-stop top-speed runaway-mine-train ride of a novel and there's no getting off - I think I was on about page 320 the first time I put it down. The plot twists, turns and jinks unexpectedly. You have to concentrate to follow what's happening as it's always moving, and can be somewhat camoflaged amongst the action, and perhaps even because there's just so damn much of it. Likewise the characterisation doesn't always quite shine out from behind the enormous guns and armoured suits, but once you get used to it and learn where to look, it's pretty impressive in it's depth and complexity. Every relationship - between characters, between factions, between man and machine - is unique, fraught and not to be trusted. For my money, this is a political / military action thriller rather than, as some have suggested, a cyberpunky exploration of the future. It has cyberpunk elements - but they don't seem to be the key to the story. It's none the worse for that. I'm hoping that the sequel takes more time to go into the developments that have brought humanity to the point of crisis described in The Mirrored Heavens, and gives the characters a bit more room to breathe, but if it doesn't... well I can't wait to see what new ways Williams comes up with to blow stuff up.
