Well Padded Fiction. July 29, 2005 LegendaryMrDude (Essex, UK) 39 out of 40 found this review helpful
After thoroughly enjoying just about every other Niven book around, (Ringworld, Lucifers Hammer, Inferno and The Integral Trees to name just a few!), as well as a truck-load of fantastic short-stories, I was really looking forward to reading this. It's a shame then that at the time I bought it, there wasn't the ability to "search inside". If I'd been able to take a peek I would have seen that it's mostly stuff I've read before padded out with assorted email chains that arose from collaborations. Admittedly there are a couple of good short stories here (as always), but it was only a small part of the whole. All of which meant it was nowhere near as entertaining as I had hoped. So if I had been able to see what was inside, I probably wouldn't have bought it.

I've read the other two books in this series,N-Space and Playgrounds of the Mind, both of which were excellent compilations with old stories collected together as well as author insights and recollections and some new stuff. This one ,although a slimmer volume is full of the same type of stuff, with even more of Larry's anecdotes and collaborative endeavours.I've been looking forward to this book for a while, being a massive Larry Niven fan and can recommend that all Larrys fans should read this as well as anyone interested in realistic Hard SF,old style but with a modern feel.

An eclectic collection or LN taking it easy? There are some excellent new stories (well I hadn't read them before), some excerpts from novels I had all read before, some short notes about himself and some collection of emails to colleagues. Yes all very interesting but Isaac Asimov did it better.
