5 out of 5 stars Another compulsive read   March 6, 2004

Lisanne Norman (Turning Point, Fortune's Wheel, Fire Margins) has a hit series on her hands. The first book in the Sholan Alliance (turning point) details the first meeting of Kusac Aldatan, a Sholan telepath, and Carrie, a human woman with the "gift" of being joined mentally with her twin sister. The book was enjoyable reading and used a very easy to read style. Some have called it amateurish, I just call it a good story.

The second book, Fortune's wheel, takes us aboard the Khalossa and ultimately to Shola where Carrie must learn what it means to be leska to a Sholan male and member of the telepath guild.

Now in Fire Margins, this author has hit her stride. Full of wonderful ideas like gods and goddesses that were once ordinary people, and viruses that mutate DNA to produce Sholan/Human hybrids, Fire Margins is a book to keep and return to. I loved it. I particularly liked the way the God Vartra was (1500 years ago) Doctor Vartra, a Sholan geneticist with a psychic gift for making his genetic experiments "work" the way he wants them to, not the way nature "says" they shouldn't.

When you buy this (you are, going to buy this) set aside plenty of time, because you will not want to do anything else until you finish it.

2 out of 5 stars An entertaining read, but not much of a challenge   May 22, 1999
It says something that I've read up to the third book, but sometimes I wonder why I'm still reading it. I suppose it's because the story itself is really good despite problems in style, and the secret soap-opera lover in me likes the interplay between the characters, particularly the romance between humans and the feline Sholan. Ms. Norman has steadily improved her writing since her amateurish debut in Turning Point, but she still seems to be childish in her style . . . it's like a drama written for teenagers, with emotional histrionics, people being immature, plots randomly thrown in for tension, etc. The main draw for me is the Sholans themselves, and the touchy-feelie closeness you experience as you read. A good read, but intellectually and stylistically still immature.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!   February 16, 1999

What more can I say? A truly wonderful series. I have read the first 3 books now and I hope that they carry on the same way! I tried to find book 4 here in the UK but so far I have had a fruitless search. Perhaps book 4 will be the first one I purchase over the internet.... Maybe. :)

5 out of 5 stars A great world to visit!   November 18, 1998
Not since Pern have I come upon such an interesting world to visit. I think the author has done an increasingly interesting and sophisticated job of "filling" out Shola. I hope she has plans to continue the series as there are many interesting story lines developed in Fire Margins. I personally hated to come to the end of this good-sized read as Ms Norman's characters are realistic, likeable, and easy to become involved with. I would recommend this book to any reader who likes to visit alien worlds.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest books I have ever read   July 27, 1998
After I read the first two books in the series I thought that it was a good series. But after this book I thought this was a great series. Now I cant put the fourth book down.
