A Refreshing Read May 27, 2004 M4Nimal (UK) 6 out of 15 found this review helpful
This book is almost the antithesis of Sun Tzu's 'The Art of War' and validates itself through, in the beginning, the fine example of what Morihei Ueshibas did with his life (force). It succeeds in making you concede that alot of it's (his) teachings are also based on similar fundamental 'truths'. It's almost as if there is something willing you from inside to understand the deeper meanings of his words, and open your mind to percieving everything as he did. Again, everything is through interpretation (the proverbial chinese whispes) but the messages are so strong that the words still manage to convey the original meaning of his 'teachings'. Slightly poetic and a bit out of context at times, but the ideas behind it all shine through. Fascinating stuff.
An compelling view in to the mind of a master September 8, 2003 18 out of 19 found this review helpful
Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of aikido, was in my view one of the greatest martial artists of all time. Although being a man of peace, he fully understood where and when force must be used, and even as an old man of 81 he could take on almost any number of opponents, defeat them, but leave them unharmed. He was a man totally in control of his life and destiny and this book is full of quotes and short poems that he based his life upon. Instead of teaching you how to deliver fast and deadly kicks, Morihei Ueshiba believed that if you trained enough, were confident in yourself, and were in tune with your suroundings, then you can take on anybody. This is a book for anybody, you do not have to practice aikido, or any style of martial art for that matter, it is a book explaining Morihei Ueshiba goverend his life and how he believed everybody should live theirs.
