3 out of 5 stars Basic Nunchaku Vol 2   October 6, 2007

This book should be a follow up of Demura first book. This book still covers basics, which it does well. I would recommend this as a basic or intermediate book.

5 out of 5 stars Buy along with his other book   September 16, 2005
In response to the first reviewer's point that this book does not include blocking or choking techniques - they are in Femio Demura's first Nunchaku book - Nunchaku:Karate Weapon of Self Defence. As such you really need both books - which are both excellent, to complete your knowledge.

the only gripe i have is that the photos would be slightly easier to understand in colour

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad   October 17, 2003

Advanced NunChaku goes through a variety of different techniques with the NunChaku beginning with various methods of holding the nunchaku and including swinging and striking techniques, changing hand positions and grasps on the nunchucks, double flips, combinations, double nunchaku's, idea's for self defence and kata.
The book mainly comprises of a large amount of pictures following step by step through the various moves with an explanation of how to accomplish the move to the left of the pictures.

The main strong points of the book are the parts on self defence which uses some nice techniques including that of against knife attacks, punches and various grabs. The rest of the book is a good basic learning source with a variety of techniques thrown in to each range making it alright however its strong point i think the 12 self defence techniques.

The weakness of the book are that firstly it is a book ;) well just that as a book it is a lot harder to follow than various videos, as a book will need more concentration and figuring it out in general to understand than a video would. The other weaknesses of the book is that it doesn't cover two aspects of the Nunchucks, the first and more important is that choking techniques are not included and neither are (less important) bloking techniques. Choking is a very important feature of the nunchucks and that is disappointedly not included in the book.

The Book itself isn't at all bad just that there are easier ways to pick up aspects of the NunChucks than this book.

Overall If your learning for the first time My advice would be to get a video as the techniques would be easier to pick up and follow , however if not an extra source is always handy and it does contain a large amount of referances for wider reading on the back cover. There are some good websites such as :http://nunchaku.tv/ which contain videos of a large variety of techniques which are done probably a tad to fast to follow easily but are alright + they are free ;)

5 out of 5 stars Basic, but brilliant   June 5, 2003

I bought this book to give me a grounding in 'The Way of the Nunchaku', and it did just that. I found it to be very useful, photos are all well labelled so it is an easy to understand step-by-step guide to kicking a$$ with nunchakus! highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Basic instruction guide...   November 23, 1998

It was a bit basic but it did provide a good foundation for swinging the 'chucks. The photos are a bit confusing at times, but I've been able to figure them all out eventually. What I find lacking is the philosophy behind the nunchaku movements; in other words, why do we do such things or why do we decide to go in this direction? Understanding the philosophy to the art will help users develop their own techniques and styles...
