4 out of 5 stars A great read!   January 3, 2008
Chris (Ireland)
I picked up this book by chance and was very pleasantly surprised. Jonny Bealby takes a very unique approach to writing a travel book, combining two different journeys with the emphasis on the trip around Africa and the side line story being about his late fiancée.

His choice of language and ability to visually describe the trip put the reader right on the "back seat" of his motorbike. He very well describes his emotions on a somewhat lonely trip, making this book very unique in the travel book world.

The only downside I found was that there are certain parts of the trip left out. Chapters sometimes end in one place with the next continuing miles along the journey, with no reference to the part in between. Maybe these parts were unimportant or uneventful, but given his ability to make even mundane or boring parts of the trip exciting to read about, I'm sure that a few pages would not have gone astray.

I would definitely recommend this book, regardless of whether you are planning a similar trip, are interested in motorbikes or have no travel interest in Africa.

5 out of 5 stars Insane or adventurer?   November 18, 2007

A brilliant travel book that once you start you won't want to put it down.
I don't know if Jonny is insane or simply very courageous.
Highly recommended read.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining all the way   May 22, 2007

I enjoyed this book a lot. After a heartbreaking intoroductory chapter, he embarks on an ambitious journey, made all the more difficult when his friend pulls out so he goes it alone.

Most writers travelling through Africa travel one-way, but he went all the way down and then back up again on the other side - giving the reader insights into twice as many countires, peoples and customs. And it is a great story. Enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars What a stinker!   February 22, 2005

The stinker is the author rather than the book. Unfortunately he writes quite well so, although I became progressively alienated from the author the more I read, I did finish the book.

By his own account the author scrounged his way across Africa, often benefitting from the generosity of very poor people. When his scrounging tactics fail (well done the Dakar Rally organisers) rather than taking it as "That's the way the cookie crumbles" he villifies the people who have not fallen for his line. A typical example of his behaviour was to con his way into an unoccupied luxury appartment to provide a birthday entertainment for his then girlfriend. Why on earth she wanted to marry him I have absolutely no idea. Presumably his gormless charm outweighed her commonsense.

His behaviour in merrily going into war zones putting other people at risk (those so-called uncaring Foreign Office employees everyone loves to criticise) is outrageous. He is entitled to kill himself but not to take other people with him. I am deeply relieved that I bought this book secondhand so he did not benefit.

5 out of 5 stars travel book with a twist   November 15, 2003

When one experiences tragedy in their life what do they do? Become an alcoholic? throw themselves into their work ? Cry endlessly whilst listening to their loved one's favourite songs? Not this guy, he decided to bike round Africa!

The Book has all the usual twists and turns that you would expect someone would encounter whilst riding round this vast continent. Although what sets it apart from the normal travel adventure book is the manner in which is written, it consistently features "flash backs" where the author remembers his lost wife. It also has an underlying, and subtle, theme of romance.

I would definitely recommend this book, it is easy to read and you cannot fail to connect with the author as he expresses emotions that we all feel from time to time.
