Customer Reviews:
A glorious book ...September 17, 2003 I had limited wood-working experience before I started, but found the author's instructions to be clearly written. The author's passion for his subject is infectious! He breaks every stage with a double page spread that shares his favourite canoeing spots (unfortunately for me all in the U.S.), tips and experience. I found these breaks helped keep me motivated and keen (the whole project takes over 100 hours, although this includes making your own seat and paddle which you could just buy if you wanted to).
There were a few places where my complete lack of wood-working knowledge held me up (there are a couple of places in the instructions where a small amount of knowledge is assumed), but none caused me much bother once I'd thought about it for a bit. The only other difficulty I had was tracking down local equivalents of the American timbers used in the construction (a bit of web surfing and a few phone calls sorted out equivalents and/or suppliers of American timbers, however).
I enjoyed the book very much and love my little canoe!
