Inspirational! August 27, 2008 Ms. Emily Green (London UK) Simply loved it! Not being a particularly avid sports fan myself I was pleasantly suprised by this gem of a read. Don't be put off. Boardfree is not just about skating (although it is pretty impressive stuff)... Infact this book focuses much more on Dave's personal journey of breaking away from convention and, against all odds, turning an ordinary life into something extraordinary! And whats more for the good of others. Couldn't wish for a better message. An inspiring account written with both wit and intelligence. Something in it for everyone. Even my mum read it! I highly recommend!
Great read! April 3, 2008 B. Spinage (Watford, UK) I loved this book and found it very hard to put it down! A very enjoyable read even though I have never been on a skateboard in my life. Made me laugh... and cry. Even though I don't think longboarding is for me reading it has made me think about challenging myself in some way-although probably not resulting in a world record-or as many blisters!
Amazing journey - brilliant book March 28, 2008 Rachael Knowland (London, UK) I don't often read non-fiction books, but this one was recommended to me by a friend who said it was brilliant, so I gave it a go and wasn't disappointed. The journey itself and the dedication by all involved is inspirational. The book conveys this without being patronising; it makes you feel exhausted even though you're not pushing, frustrated when things go wrong and exhilarated when they're going well. In places it makes you laugh out loud and although, by the end of it, you might not want to skateboard across Australia, this book will make you want to go on to do bigger and better things yourself.
It was a journey and a half, that's for sure! March 25, 2008 L. R. Hatwell (UK) This book is a particularly good read. If you are a person seeking a new challenge or someone who likes longboarding, it's definitely one for the bedside table. Once I started reading, I found it very hard to stop. If you followed the Boardfree journey through its ups and downs, you will agree that Dave's narrative style has matured since he began his original blog on the event. The thing that made Boardfree might have been the longboarding, it might have been the man on the board, but what is clear in the book, is that it wouldn't have been possible at all without the help of extraordinary ordinary people; the support team, the charities, the families, the people of the length of Britain and span of Australia. This book is a document of their kindness, and it is testament to that kindness that the journey became a mobile phenomenon. Not bad for Pommies. There are some realities in this book. It wasn't all calm seas and plane sailing out there. The human element both helped and hindered the journey. With nine other people to worry about, Boardfree wasn't just about moving along, it was about getting along. This book is a fair representation of things as they happened, with Dave's honesty about his own shortcomings getting more than a mention. I'll leave it to you to decide if you want to buy this book. But let me fire a few buzz words at you: Kangaroos. Melted Shoes. Barbecues. Hilarity. Hills. Blisters. Tears. Elation. Australia. In case this review comes across as biased, I'm sorry, I should mention I was the one handing him water bottles and shaking a fundraising bucket (along with a fabulous team) in the 40 degree heat!
