3 out of 5 stars Tough to start   October 10, 2008
Richard Hammond (St. Albans, UK)
My ten-year old daughter has a voracious appetite for books but has tried and failed three times to read this one. That's not to suggest it's a bad book but it certainly says something about accessibility. Having taken it off Issy and read the first chapter (and skimmed through the remainder) for myself I can understand why she struggled - there's too much effort in the writing and that translates into too much effort for the reader. It *is* beautifully written but that craft shows and is distracting, especially for a ten-year-old. There is though a lot of story and some exceptional ideas on top of a breath-taking range of imagination. I can well imagine that some readers will love it. So three-stars, what does that really mean? I think it means pick it up and decide for yourself, I guess.

1 out of 5 stars Not very enjoyable at all   October 5, 2008
E. Chittenden (Wiltshire, UK)
This was a whimsical book that really didn't captivate me at all. I had hoped for a light hearted well written book, but it wasn't. I got a third of the way through and I couldn't bring myself to read any further.

3 out of 5 stars Good but let down by weak ending   September 26, 2008
sam (UK)
It's good, in short.

It isn't going to be one of those books that you re-read over and over and treasure right into adulthood. It is entertaining and - dare I say it - educational. It has some nice emotional depth that presents very real -- and very modern -- moral dilemmas and tackles them in a mature but light-hearted way. There is plenty of action and enough jokes to keep it fun. I quite like the "educational" side lines and the narrators voice doesn't really annoy me like other reviewers have mentioned.

The ending is rotten and a terrible cop-out and feels like it was added by the editor just before going to press. Everything is motoring along and then is brought to a swift end in just 10 pages.

It does feel slightly like a book written to order by a team of talented editors trying to tick all the boxes, rather than a genuine labour of love by one person, but it is nothing like "i'm a teenage health freak" for lecturing wrapped in a novel.

Overall, enjoyable but not a life-long friend.

5 out of 5 stars Who Is Bosch ? That's Secret !   September 21, 2008
A. Rose (Wet & Windy Yorkshire, UK)
I really loved this book and was sad to leave Cass and Max-Ernest but I live in hope that there might be a sequel. Although this book is aimed at teenage readers, this is truly a book for all children as there are no difficult to understand passages, no bad language and will not give young ones nightmares. The chapters are just the right length for a parent to read one each night to young children (say, age 6 - 9) and just right for older kids to read for themselves and get to a suitable ending.

The storyline (I can't tell you what it's about, it's secret - no, really!) is simple but entertaining and has something for all - the circus, magic, kidnap, riddles, goodies and baddies and loads of make-believe. It's very humorous and also has some quirky educational snippets i.e. how to make a compass and how to write in code, and they both work.

I thoroughly recommend this book and, indeed, this author and I think kids will be crying out for a sequel to this story.

3 out of 5 stars Good idea; good fun to read   September 18, 2008
J. E. M. Kneale (Liverpool, Merseyside United Kingdom)
The name of this book is secret; the first chapter cannot be published because of course you would be made aware of characters and situations; the whole book is one vast secret. An enjoyable and mysterious read. No, I can't tell you what happens... It's secret!
