In the best tradition of Star Trek stories September 24, 2000 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Voyager is damaged by one of those annoying little spacial anomolies that keep croping up in the delta quadrant, and find they are not the only ones in trouble in the area. A somewhat primitive but quickly developing culture (on a nearby planet in the system they are stranded in) risk the destruction of their world due to unusually dramatic siesmic activity. What should the Voyager crew do? It's that old Prime Directive hampering their desire to save lots of people. Then there's the complication of another space-faring alien race hanging around. They say they want to help the planet like Voyager does, but do they? Along the way Janeway, Tuvok and Harry are stranded on the planet with the primitive folk, and Chakotay and Paris are strangely affected by the suspicious aliens. Torres does lots of amazingly clever things that I had a job to follow (but it all sounds very plausible), and there's abit of battle action too. Then there are the strange dream-like visions that some of the crew experience... it all adds up to a pretty good book. It's easy to get involved in the action down on the planet, say, and the next chapter is set up in space and you've been so involved in what's going on down on the surface that you've almost forgotten about the ship! It is well written, and unlike some Voyager novels, there isn't the angst about some of the crew members. It's not gritty or dark, just a very good read. How does it all end up? You'll have to read it to find out, won't you?
