3 out of 5 stars disappointing follow-up   August 6, 2008
classic 1965 (New York, NY USA)
My kids - aged 2 and 4 - love the original Gruffalo story and ask to read it almost every bedtime. There was initial excitement when I brought this one home. But after a couple of readings they quickly stopped asking for it. If I suggest reading it now, they say "no, we want the first Gruffalo story".

In truth, the original Gruffalo story is so good that it's a very, very tough act to follow. But, even allowing for that, this sequel almost entirely lacks most of the features that make the first story so memorable. It hasn't got anything like the same rhythm in the writing. And the plot meanders its way to a weak pay-off that has little impact and doesn't make much sense.

All-in-all, a disappointing follow-up to the excellent original.

5 out of 5 stars loved it!   March 6, 2008

Lovely to have a book that we didn't know the ending for. The rhyming is great and keeps you moving through the book at a good pace and it is beautifully illustrated in a fun way with lots of little details that aren't immediately obvious so you can keep coming back to it and spotting more. Our 11 month old is really starting to enjoy it and my husband has also remarked on this being one his favourite books to read to her.

What a great follow on from the Gruffalo. My daughter loves it and it's a great way to teach children not to go off on their own.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Childrens Book   April 25, 2007

Not quite as good as the original gruffalo, but still an excellent childrens book that my son absolutely adores.

It will not make much sense if you have not read the gruffalo, so make sure you read that first before this book.

Al the same characters are there from the original book, and this is quite funny too. The illustrations are marvellous and there are some very funny drawings, like the mouses snowman that will also entertain small children.

5 out of 5 stars More Gruffalo, Great   August 18, 2006

Once again a great book, very enjoyable with rhymes and lovely pictures. Julia Donaldson has done it again - another hit with my 4yr old and his older siblings everyone loves these books ( Gruffalo and Gruffalo's child) a story I can happily read time after time.
