An Excellent work of art .. May 12, 2008 Raza Abidi Hardy examines the difficulties in the life of a women and explores the inner feelings of Tess during the events that happened to her. The novel brings you the ages old question of fate and free will and he left it on the reader to decide if they really are free in this world to live the life as they want to. An excellent novel that still can be related to the situation of women in today's society. We believe that women is now independent and liberated from the burdens of social nomrs and is now living according to her free will. But is it really true? Read the novel and you will realize how wrong you are if you think like this, you will be reminded of many women that you personally know who were exploited by someone in the same manner. Only the time is different and perhaps the names.
Work of Art January 22, 2008 N. Khan (UK) I'm in love with this book. Truely amazing. I know Tess is just a fictional protagonist but I truely believed her character and was moved especially by the last few pages of the book. If there is one book you should read before you die it just certainly be this one.
Genius October 9, 2007 Simon (London United Kingdom) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I think that Thomas Hardy's poetry lends his description a lovely rhythm, and the bleakly tragic story is one of the most moving I've ever read. My complaint is only that the portrayal of Tess as pure and virtuous, etc. becomes slightly irritating after a while.
Frustrating, even infuriating sometimes but ultimately compelling October 1, 2007 Young Stevie (London, England) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Another of those classics that is a must read. A story of a young country girl whose life is doomed because of a crime committed against her. The author is obviously quite taken with the locale in which the story is set and uses rich descriptions to paint an almost tangible picture in the reader's imagination. It's well written although I did found myself wanting to scream a number of times at the apparent naivety that Tess still displays even after the fact. And by the end of the book I was left feeling quite emotionally drained by the amount of bad luck that befalls this poor girl in her short & tragic life. It is a book that has to be read though, the language isn't as tough as in Wuthering Heights say, so it's easy to understand; a lot happens obviously so it goes along at a fair pace and the supporting characters are intersting and quite well developed. All in all, good stuff!
A must read March 24, 2007 B0udicca (uk) Hardy presents social injustice in a non-didactic way through Tess and many of his other novels. This is an amazing read following Tess's journey through social injustices in a patriarchal society. There are so many underlying themes that it is easy to miss them thats why i have read it three times...it is soooo good.
