Fascinating Story February 23, 2008 Florence B (Grenoble, France) I am 10 years old and this book made me cry. It is the third book in my whole life that I have given 10/10. Everyone who reads this book will love it. It is about a horse who went to the First World War in France and tells you all the horrors that he went through. A beautiful story about friendship and courage.
Anti-war novel December 28, 2007 Bookworm Joey the horse is sold to the army and witnesses the horrors and absurdity of the First World War, and the terrible things humans do to each other to control a piece of land. It is a heart-wrenching tale of love and loss, a classic for children and adults, now being adapted to the stage at the National Theatre in London. For something more up-to-date see also 'My Brother Johnny' by Francesco D'Adamo which deals with the stress and guilt of a young returning war-hero, forced to carry out inhuman and unnecessary acts of cruelty in the name of a modern hi-tech war very much like Afghanistan on Iraq.
I am nearly 33 and i have not cried like this for a long time! July 22, 2006 A. Burgess (Surrey) 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
What a fantastic brilliant book, it deserves more than 5 stars beleive me! I read this book in the school Libarary when I was approx 13years old and never really forgotten about it since. My daughter is having terrible trouble with her reading at school so the teachers asked me to do some more home learning with her. I instantly thought of this book I read from 20years ago and bought it off amazon. I arrived this morning and as soon as I started reading it, I couldnt put it down. Ive spent the whole morning and even now 2 hours after I completed the book am I still in tears!! A combinantion of a fantastic storyline, sadness and happiness - I am going to treasure this book for the rest of my life and ensure my children, grandchildren & great grandchildren read this!!!!!
Everyone should read this book! April 20, 2006 T. J. Measures (Warsop, Notts) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Not since Black Beauty has there been a book like this one. War Horse also tells the plight of the soliders, both German and English and the horrors that they went through. It made me cry but the ending made me smile as well. I think everyone should read it and Anna Sewell would have been proud of it!
A book review of war horse February 14, 2006 madeleine (The Grenadines) 13 out of 16 found this review helpful
The book I am reviewing is called War Horse by Michael Morpurgo. This book is about a chestnut stallion called Joey who is sold to the army during the First World War, because his owner’s father runs out of money. This story is set in the countryside of England and Joey is sent to France to fight. It was exciting to read the story from Joey’s point of view. It was sad all the way through until the end when the war is over and the boy buys back his horse and gets married. I think not just horse lovers should read this book. It is a great story for all ages. It is a very exciting story based in a realistic time and place. I think Michael Morpurgo enjoys emotional stories because it made me sad. There is also When the whales came and The Wreck of The ZANZIBAR.
