Excellent for beginners September 7, 2008 Mr. H. Kibble (England, UK) This book probably should have been called 'beginners guide to website promotion.' While it had a wealth of information for people just learning to put a basic website together, it didn't teach me anything new, as I already had a moderate knowledge in that field. If you don't already know some ways to drive traffic to your website, then you will learn a lot of fundemental information from this book.
Great book to start you off July 29, 2008 G. Cucchiara (London, U.K.) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I think some reviewers don't really get the idea of this very straightforward book. Before you buy a weighty encyclopedia of Web Optimisation promising you that it's easy to do it yourself, read this handbook first-it will only take you an hour and a half. Sure, if you then decide you do want to go ahead and optimise your own website (madness, unless you have bags of free time) then you will need to get some more detailed and up-to-date info...but you can get this for free on the web. However, if, like me, you decide after reading the Ultimate Web, you don't have the time or can't be bothered to do it yourself, then at least you will have had a very good grounding in the basics of Search Engine Optimisation. This is really useful if you are going to employ a professional SEO. It will mean you will totally understand what they are talking about. Highly recommended.
Exactly what you need... April 6, 2008 C. Hannan 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I found the book to be really good in helping you see the benefits of getting your stuff seen by many people, helping you understand tagging and how search engines work so you can really make the most of search engines .. Its not an over complicated book, written in simple English, and easy to understand. Its not a bulk, which so many books are, and doesnt really confuse you. Gets to the point and easy to use. With regards to the previous review about complaining about spelling and how it uses "uk english" and spelling "programme" and not program.. its not an English book, and if that bothers you, pay an extra couple of quid for the USA import..its really not an issue with the book. There are other books which focus more on specifics and are more detailed, but this book is simple, 128 pages which are easy to understand.. you wont find yourself getting bored of it.. Enjoy and hope they get to do a new version focused on Web 2 and widgets etc
Basic introduction to SEO - better alternatives available April 1, 2008 Mr. E. A. Mandell (London, England) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I agree with N.J. Pendrell that if you've never read anything about SEO then this isnt a bad book, but there are some far better introductions to SEO available (The Dummies Guide is good) I really didnt learn anything from this book and I found it particularly annoying that the guy insisted on using the UK English spellings for words like programme, I've worked in IT in the UK for over 20 years and I've never seen anyone refer to a 'computer programme' instead of a 'computer program' unfortunately the Americans won this battle a long time ago. Generally in the UK we have Television Programmes but Computer Programs. That apart its quite a lightweight introduction, a bit heavy on the 'formulas for success' type of approach but there are some other really good books out there
Does what it says on the tin October 15, 2007 M. Redrado (London, England) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought this book after finding an article about it on a site called interwoveness.com.This review was written by someone who understands website promotion, so I don't agree with the comments below from N.J .Pendell. Sure, if you are an expert there may be nothing to add to your repertoire but for everyone else, including those who know quite a bit or next to nothing, this is a very useful book and so easy and pleasurable to read. I also don't agree that "it is more 2004 than 2007" and is "a little out of date". I have checked through every reference site in the book and they're all still going. The books says Google is king and at this moment in late 2007 that fact is still very true. Another good sign is that i checked up on all the testimonials at the front of the book, and those guys really are on the 1st page of Google searches. Ok, many of them have websites in businesses which are not fiercely competitive and so easier to optimise...but that's not the book's fault. But maybe the writer, who is a guitarist, should have pointed out that it will take a lot longer than a month for the search engines to push up your site, if you are in a highly popular field. For this reason only, I have given the book 4 and not 5 stars. I highly recommend it to anyone who has a good website which few people get to see.
